So it only started to happen when it got cold out. When I have cruise control ON and I go up a hill the rpm's go up and I get over the hill they dont go back down, they just stay up. I have to turn off the cruise then turn it back on for the rpm's to drop. Any ideas?
Happens to me too. I think it does it when on an incline so that you can keep giving it power to get up the incline, instead of shifting down and giving you lower torque. It does shift for me once I level out.
wait... now i know that the rpm's will jump when going up, but mine since it started snowing, have not went back to normal AFTER the hill. I could be going up a hill, the rpm's jump up, then I will be going down a hill right after and the rpm's are still up.
Mine would do that crap -- annoying as hell. I always just cancelled the cruise and worked the throttle myself when going up hills to save me from having to deal with all the drama. There's no good reason that i can think of that you'd still need to be in 3rd after climbing a hill but apparently the genius Toyota engineers seem to think so. Sometimes it would do that with the cruise off, if I tried to give it a little gas to speed up or pass somebody and it would downshift it wouldn't go back into 4th for a mile sometimes. The electronics for the cruise and transmission control are on crack!

Hopefully it resumes normal operation in the spring and i just have to clean a sensor or something. its a minor annoyance but I can live with taking cruise off for a hill....its just really hilly in this part of MN
I haven't gone up any major hills this winter, but last year I went to Sedona by way of I-17 and I really appreciated the Vibe's cruise control. It never let my speed go more than 2 MPH out of line and then it downshifted. It was even smart enough to hold the lower gear when the climb leveled out some, but not all the way. This as opposed to the GMs that I've driven, which always upshifted the minute the climb leveled a bit.
