I have a strange sound under the car when it is moving, it kind of sounds like metal scrapping or rattling. Does anyone have any ideas, it is a 05 vibe with about 47000 miles on it. The brakes have not been replaced but I am not sure what it sounds like when they need to be replaced. Anything will help thanks guys.
Bad/worn brakes usually dont make noise unless the brake is being applied.so if the noise is not present when the brakes are being applied then the issue is probably not your brakes. other instances of similar described noise have been a loose heat shield.
I had a strange sound under my 2004 once....took it to the dealer only to find that there was a small branch stuck under the car right in the center that was making noise when moving .....I had looked under the car but didn't see anything...I guess I should have looked better....there was no charge from the dealer.
I hit a pile of snow once and it bent the heat shield by the exhuast pipe under the center of the car. Every time I would accelerate the rattle would get worse. I bent the shield back and the rattle stopped.
I had same thing last summer on my 2003 vibe... like a metal rattling when car is rolling... but could not find anything loose under car. When I jacked the car and spun wheel had the rattling on back tires. Was just piece of rusted drum (drum brakes) that fell inside the drum and rattling around inside the drum. Try checking that. All I did was remove drums and cleaned-out the loose pieces inside. Brake pads were fine, so reinstalled everything and problem was gone.
