hey all im thinking of purchasing a GPS unit for the vibe since ive come to the conclusion that the car pc and gps combo the Infill G4 offers is way to overpriced 2500....anyone have a GPS Unit for their car..if so whats the Brand and Model...so far im leaning towards the Tom Tom Go 720....costs from $350 to $400http://www.tomtom.com/products...d=4opinions/comments?
I've got one of the lower end TomTom One (3rd edition) units. Personally, I prefer the TomTom interface to the Garmin one (I don't have much experience with any of the others). Some folks say that the Garmin maps are more accurate, but the newer TomToms all support MapShare, so you should be able to correct any minor inaccuracies you find on your own (as well as reap the benefits of any pre-corrected maps that are already available). Another thing I personally dig about the TomToms is that underneath the pretty interface, they're running an embedded Linux distribution. There's an active mod community and I've been able to correct the few minor gripes that I had about my personal device without too much difficulty. The One that I've got is a pretty bare-bones model feature-wise. I can't speak to how well it handles the hands-free calling or media options. My experience with those features on either the TomToms or any other model is limited to what I've found out playing with the units in various big box retail stores. One other company you might want to look at is Dash. They're new to the market, but the device they're offering looks pretty intriguing.
I run a new 720 and love it, voice commands are nice, my parents run a 910 and it's not bad for the reduced price since the 920 (huge HD for MP3's and pics if you use it for that) is now out as long as you can live without the voice command inputs but SiRFstarIII architecture is the way to go... I've done a bunch of searching and I found the 720 for the price features and size of screen and ease of use it's pretty decent if you don't need the remote....if you are simply using it in car.. Cheers Brian

You can even get the source off the TomTom site (there was a fight about this a few years back, but they are now GPL compliant). You can read some about it here. For some reason the TomTom site is running rather slowly today and I can't get to it to give you the direct link. I guess people want the latest maps and software for their shiny new toys.
I have the 720. Love it, BUT they don't have any of the accessories or replacement parts available. I broke the windsheid mount trying to set up a custom mounting bracket, and they STILL don't have a replacement available!

I have a Garmin c340 and I've had it since April... I like it a lot, mainly cause I'm on the road for work. It does everything I need it to do... although some of the newer models do have Bluetooth built in for hands-free phone stuff, which I think would be pretty sweet.I had a buddy that had borrowed his parents Tom Tom a few times... then he used my Garmin for a trip. He liked the Garmin so much that he went out and got the exact same model that I have.Just my two cents... maybe it will help, maybe it won't.

i just picked up a Garmin Nuvi 250w...so far i love it alot, it's very very accurate and easy to use. gonna put it to the real test when i go to the epic meet
I have a Garmin 330 ....its very basic but does absolutely everything it needs to do...plus I got it at Christmas for $129.00 (I've seen them cheaper now) so I don't fret about it being stolen, lost, or breaking....I also don't mind loaning it out to friends etc because it was not too expensive....I'm sure the newer models are even more amazing.....
TomTom 720 $231 ebay, refurb unit, though I can't tell it from new.Played with all the brands/models in the store.Mainly wanted to integrate bluetooth hands free for my phone and to control my iPod.Phone integration is great. With audio cable out of TomTom to car unit, the radio/cd quiets while phone call is in service. Still waiting on a cable kit to control iPod, so haven't evaluated that function as yet.Found the 720 fast to change on the fly, and easy/accurate to add the half dozen or so addresses I've used so far to find. Been spot on - no false detours like my old Garmin V.
Easy to use interface, works great.Sound volume is less routed via the tomtom than direct from iPod headphone jack to aux in on radio.Sound is loud enough, but tomtom and radio need to be both set at max. for the level I like. Again - I find the end volume acceptable, just not as loud as it can go direct. ymmv
