AWD Donuts in the snow!!! (Two total)

Post by Whelan »

Hey all, got some snow today in CT. Went to the beach to play really quick. I'm goin out with my bud later to get some better video from outside. But for now, enjoy. And for all the FWD'ers out there, feel free to kneel and pray during this video, LOL!Check the second video, better quality with my digi cam setup on a stool I brought down. Good one in the beginning and right after the Jeep leaves. http://youtube.com/watch?v=hEaBmco8O9E http://youtube.com/watch?v=44Vhuuaklnk

just remember not to keep going in one direction... to possibly prevent letting your oil pump suck nothing but air

I should go do donuts again. I did some on my little excursion I took the other day, but no place to put the camera to take video. http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=31232

Is it possible to screw up your wheel balancing by doing this. I only ask because driving today on the highway there was a shimmy at 50 and anything about 60 the car was just wobbling like crazy. I pulled over to check it out. All the wheels are torque'd properly (had my TW in the car, double checked), the alignment is fine and the car does not pull. A brief inspection underside showed nothing broken or loose.I am wondering if even if your alignment is good and your wheels torqued, if the tires not being in balance can cause such a shimmy/wobble. I was doing those donuts last night so it's why I ask before dropping it to get some work done.

my theory would be snow somewhere in or on your rims. it's throwing off the balance.

The rims looked clean, I though snow in the tires but doesn't seem to be enough to cause this. Unless cause the tread is so new that the snow is really packed into it.

keep in mind, that tiny little slider is what's used to balance most wheels, so it doesn't take much to throw it off.

I may run out for lunch and get them balance, can't hurt and if it works then suhweet!I really think its the balance cause at low speeds its fine but high speeds are what shakes like crazy.

That is where the problem lies, trust me... you drift to the left and the right side wheel fills with snow, drift to the right and the left wheel fills... you'll see...

Yeah it was kinda hard as the area was small and I didn't want to hit a curb. When it snows again Sunday I may try to get a better one, I didn't wanna push it either, that whole oil pump engine blown thing has me freaked. Although I'm not pushing it near as hard as that kid was. But I did get one or two good ones, especially at the end after the Jeep passed me.I'm heading to the spray shop during lunch, Gonna get the $5 wash see what happens.

NOOOOOOOO, your gonna have to get OUT and put the sprayer into any open areas of the wheels and clean the inside out... the drive through isn't going to fix it...

So I pulled in, had a smoke, checked the wheels, they seemed clean, got the rest of the sluch from the well. Then took her on the highway quick. 60,70, 80, not a problem! Guess being in the garage at work where its 46 degrees helps.

This is the first car I've owned that has alloy wheels so I attribute some of it to that, all the other ones were Steelies and I never did donuts in them. So the snow must not have been packed like it was on these. Oh well, lesson learned!

Oh well, lesson learned!Wait till the tires start leaking on you each winter... that's always fun...Something about allow wheels after a few years have a tendency to leak around the bead of the tire... We run into this ALL the time... also the whole out of balance thing... quite common, people always think there's something wrong with the car, when all it is, is a little snow... just .25 ounces can give your tire a shake due to out of balance...
