Magnaflow Exhaust Problem!!!

Post by rlfreese »

Well, I was driving home from work and heard a big pop and my exhaust got really loud. I thought maybe a bolt fell out or something but no, there is a big gaping hole in teh side at the bend at the bottom rear or the rear axle area, it wasnt hit or anything, looks like a torch burned out the hole. This really pisses me off. My brother is fixing it for me, he has a welder and is great with exhaust. What would cause that, I never hit anything.

I believe Magnaflow has a lifetime warranty. Just bring it in to an authorized Magnaflow dealer with your bill of sale and they'll replace it.

Was there an exhaust hanger there that broke off at a weld? Seems odd that stainless steel would wear away like that. I noticed that my Magnaflow mid-pipe rouged very fast compared to the stock stainless pipes after fewer miles. I wonder what grade stainless and from what country is used.

Well, I found a big problem with my Magnaflow on the way to work this morning! I noticed it seemed a bit louder the past couple days and sounded to be coming around the cat or resonator. Well, on my way to work it suddenly got really loud and then I heard some rattling. Then it got obnoxiously loud and the car rattled like crazy. Turns out the weld failed where the pipe meets the front of the resonator! I used the clamp method to secure it, but it broke just behind the clamp. So, now I'm driving with the pipe hanging open just after the catalytic converter. It is so obnoxiously loud. I actually stopped by a shop on my way to work and they wanted to charge me close to $500 to order a new OEM midsection. I have that at home, plus I'm not putting a stock piece back in to replace only part of my after market. The first tech that took my car barely spoke English, but he was saying yes they could re-weld the joint. The next tech was a real idiot, his attitude, the way he treated me and pretty much was saying the Magnaflow exhaust was a piece of crap. He said welding wasn't an option. Their only option was to order an OEM piece, so I just left and don't plan on ever returning to that shop because of the way they treated me.I talked to Brad at Never Enough Auto where I purchased the Magnaflow back in 2005. He's being very helpful and working with me on getting a warranty replacement. I'm waiting to hear back how it's going to work out. Hopefully I'll get it soon because I do not want to be driving without my muffler. Is it harming the car to drive without it? Of course I'd much prefer not to, but it's my only car. Here is a photo:

Those of you that have had warranty claims before, how quickly were they resolved? Anyone else have theirs break in this location?Second photo:

You'll have less back pressure... but it shouldn't hurt anything... especially if it hasn't thrown a CEL yet...Some of the exhaust fumes will find their way into the car more since the exhaust is not coming out of the back of the car, but under the hatch area.

I'm surprised that the shop didn't just weld a straight 2.25 pipe and remove the resonator. That would be the cheapest route,if warranty falls through.

That was me Mavrik. Mine actually blew out at the muffler itself.http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=28235I just got a copy of the bill of sale from the company I bought it from and took it to an authorized dealer. They pretty much just want to make sure that you bought the exhaust for the current car that you are driving. They put it on order and it was fixed. Not sure if it is like this everywhere, but the shop I went to had to special order it because it was not one of their normal stock items. They were going to charge me $$$ to have it shipped direct from Magnaflow. Or I could wait several weeks and have it put on order as a normal part for free.So make sure you ask them before you get it special ordered and have to pay a lot of money that you wouldn't have to pay if you waited a few weeks. I had to pay for labor for them to install it, but the exhaust was free.

I'm working with a local dealer, called them up this morning. They are going to see what Magnaflow wants to do. I'm really hoping I can get this fixed this weekend, but I have a feeling I might not. I drove home from work yesterday and it was so loud. I passed a few cops... first I was able to pop it in neutral and coast by without being noticed. The second time there was an accident on the side of the road and I couldn't coast, I had to give it gas lightly to drive by (still LOUD) and I saw him look, but fortunately he didn't do anything. I cannot wait weeks for the part, I need it ASAP! Fortunately I can work remotely today, we'll see how things go by next week.

that sucks. where is this weld supposed to be that broke? i dont see any welding in those pics. imo (and i've olny welded once), i'd stay away from whoever welded it in the first place cause they dont seem to know how and didnt favor the pipe at all to actually join the 2 pieces together.

The weld that broke is from the Magnaflow factory, where the pipe meets the front of the resonator. There is/was about 1-2" of pipe in front of the resonator that is clamped onto the OEM pipe from the catalytic converter. That small piece separated itself right there. I just got a call back from the local shop. The way it works is I'm buying a new one from them, will install it, return the defective one, they'll return it to their distributor, and the distributor will return it to Magnaflow. The distributor then gets credited, which then credits the store, and then finally I'll get credited back. It might take a 2-3 weeks to finally get my money back, but it'll have to do. I'll be picking it up on Monday. In the end I'll only be out a $35 processing fee, which sounds kind of bogus but at least I'm not paying any shipping so I'm not complaining.
