Gas Door Sticking

Post by elrodvoss »

I dug around using a search for "gas door" and only got 2 links, so I wanted to ask in a new topic to see if anyone could help. When I open up the gas door, it will "creak" which I dont mind too much, but when you go to close it, you will hear it "snap" like it was caught on something. I have tried silcone spray and it dosent fix the problem. I cannot see where its catching. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the door and "bracket" from the car. I know there are 2 "fasteners", but I cant tell what they are.Or is there a way to remove the black spring, w/o damaging it. Maybe that is what is causeing the catching, or maybe it will let me see behind it and get a better view of everything. Thanks in advance.

so wait... you use the gas door latch by the driver seat to open.. does it pop open properly? then you should just push it shut and it should make a slight "pop" noise as its being closed because of the latch...is it not closing?

No. When I use the lever in the car, it will open correctly, but when I open it to about 90* it will creak which dont matter. But once im done refilling the car and go to close the door, you will hear a loud "snap" or crack like something just got unstuck.I was hoping to remove the door and its bracket to see what is causing the problem, but I am unable to see what the fasteners are.If need be I can try and get a sound bite and picture of what im talking about.

so before it pops close, it makes the snap noise before its closed? k think i got it. Um i know the gas door is like tack welded or something to the hinge...maybe theres a bolt to take the whole thing off? i havent checked mine yet..

Well I sprayed it tuesday afternoon and I went out and checked it today and it seems to be working alot better. It doesnt have the squeak anymore and it only "cracked"once. I guess it took a while for the oil to get into the metal. It is working alot smoother so im happy about that.Thansk for the help.

Most likely it needed to be lubed. I would stay away from WD40 as it will run down the side of the car if it sprays all over.Try getting a product called SailKote. It's made by McLube and available at most marine stores. It is a dry silicone lubricant that sprays on and dries immediately, no residue or nothing. Great stuff!
