yes the rumor is that engine will be over, many people at cobaltss.net are sort of mad about chevy dropping the SC as its nice to have that power all through the powerband, but the turbo is small enough to not have lots of lag. also the sky etc. have 260hp 260 trq! thats pretty good. But the current 2.0 in the SC isnt dual vvt direct injection so this is almost certain the new engine will be in it as its also in the HHR ss.... mmmm FI goodness
What's the point... It's hard enough to hook up 200hp in a FWD car, much less 260-280... i donno, I've never seen the point myself.. I had a friend with a VW GTi 1.8T that had everything but a different turbo done to it and it didn't hook for crap, lots of torque steer, would get rubber in the first 3 gears and 1st was basically useless...
If the car is designed right, it can avoid or minimize torque steer. The Mazdaspeed3 has 260+ horsepower and keeps the torque steer to a minimum. Now, traction is another story.
260 turbo with the limited slip system same as perhaps the mazda speed 3 would be pretty sweet. It would hook up. Maybe not in the current Vibe. but a turbo would be pretty sweet.

the cobalt has a LSD option so if it goes turbo it will most likely be standard in the SS's and have torq limited in 1st and 2nd gear maybe? I know if they use the current cobalt ss tranny the 1st gear sucks nuts even for the SC, its too short.
they are dropping the SC motor because it does not meet the up coming emissions standards.but the turboed version does.and with more power.so what not to love.lol.
LOVE THAT VIBE 2003 Satilite Silver auto.......188,000kms.2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer White 4.2 Inline 6 291hp auto.........156,000kms.
I always thought that this was the logical choice. It seemed kind of stupid to have a supercharged and a turbocharged version of the same engine. Especially since the turbo makes so much more power. I was worried that they were dropping the ss for good. That would suck because I love those cars.
well the SC 2.0 doesnt have dual vvt or direct injection. the turbo has both...so they are slightly different engines.... but yeah it is odd they had both in their fleet of gm. thing is the cobalt ss sc dominated the race circuit with turbo...we'll see how they do. I like SC cuz its there NOW turbo...gotta spool that baby.
That could probably whoop the SI's (removed) pretty easily. Is there no price announced yet? I wouldn't mind taking one for a test drive, just to see what it's like.
Civic SI? It could beat that before no problem. Now it's going to be in the realms of the Mazdaspeed3, SRT4, etc. The SI is NA and only around 190-200HP. It never stood a chance and is a waste of money.

Options are: Get sticky tires. Put heat in the tires. Limited slip front axle.My Vette breaks traction when I stift into second on cold tires but it is still hooking up. On a FWD car weight transfer is hurting you, along with torque steer and the possibility of cold tires ect... And no, not all cars are AWD, but they SHOULD be..........................
Nah I hear ya! My PT Cruiser GT Turbo would do a one wheel peel nicely at 215 engine HP! I agree though a FWD pushing that much power should be AWD at that point like the Caliber SRT should be. Or at least engineer both front wheels to spin together.
I believe the computer limits the amount of torque in first gear to prevent any issues. I'd be all over this if it was AWD. I'd like the Mazdaspeed3 but there just aren't as many aftermarket options for it as the Cobalt.
you should see the aftermarket for the cobalt.... GM actually has lots of parts because its used for racing. There is also ZZP and some others. Theres development for a twin charge, twin screw sc and turbo kits...all sorts of things.

Well sure, and car with a LSD has an advantage over one without, espicaly when upping the power, but still even with an LSD on a FWD car you have weight transfer working aginst you...
well with the cobalt ss turbo and lsd it has to be doing something right to have the fastest fwd lap time on the nurburg ring. those SC ones were winning crazy amounts of circuit racing.
lol (removed) that is the goofiest stock turbo ive seen.. well I bet either GMPP (performance division) will have the upgrade to the metal pipe ones or that will be the first upgrade for many
Quote, originally posted by Petrucci914 »oh my, they used plastic for the ducting. Ick!http://www.autoblog.com/photos...63673/Plastic ISN'T a bad option, less heat transfer than metal... the new subies use plastic end tanks on the intercoolers now.. and they have had plastic endlinks on the rear swaybars for YEAR (not that THAT is a good thing, in that spot..)
true...but i think the main issue is the fitting. if you look how it goes over the engine, it flattens out. I am assuming a 3inch round tube woulnt fit between the hood and the engine unless the hood was modified. But also look at how the plastic tube changes shape just going from the front to the back...big, small, bigg theres some restriction there.....

bout time they go turbo. As for hooking up its all in the driver/suspension. there are several 1000+hp built cobalts running around now. That is one stout 4banger.

I think 400hp was what some of those 2.0's with twin charge were getting.

We had a big discussion on this on our local car forums recently.

I'm really impressed with this car. Not only can it lap the Ring in a respectable 8:22, it can beat plenty of more expensive more powerful cars around a track:http://www.caranddriver.com/re...d=320I love the Vibe, but I wouldn't mind having a Cobalt SS so I could go autocrossing with my dad.
That article is complete garbage. But I'll not say why or what misinformation C/D tends to spew from many other reviews and data. I have yet to test the new Cobalt SS TC. I should call and see if they have any to check out. I rate them on par with the Neon SRT4..... great for power on a budget.
you cant compare a cobalt to a srt4...the srt4 cant turn! hahah the cobalt is a proven track car. It owned its cup so much it had to demod because it won sooo many. its a sweet car and glad i have some competition now There have been plenty of comparisons between ms3, ss cobalt, gti etc. and the cobalt or ms3 keep killing the competition. i likey

Shifts were a great deal smoother and obviously the times were better, close to my wife's V6 Camry! There are upgrades coming though!

For a auto and its size and haulability its a sweet rig. I sat in one and liked it, just didnt want a auto for my new car. The tranny they use is strong for what it is, but I wish they could of kept the same performance...that would be soo nice and a good drag car.

I was willing to learn, but she said "you better get an auto!" Didn't even know there was a difference in HP/TQ until after I got it!

haha well I really like driving stick, the ms3 is my first MT. Glad I got it but know what you mean. Very good thing GM offered it auto, and hey there is a market for it.
