Who crosses the Mackinac Bridge

Post by Whelan »

Just curious as I am watching it on History Channel as we speak. Yes I'm a HC buff and love watching those shows. Just curious.

I cross the bridge every summer on vacation. The straights of Mackinac is a very windy area (even have a couple wind turbines). they will close the bridge occasionally for elevated winds. I remember back in the '80s somebody in a Yugo got blown over the side. Very cool bridge (as far as bridges go).Mike

I've gone across it when the fam visted MI, It's a cool bridge, but after the MN Bridge aftermath, I've tried to kind of stay off large bridges for a while.

Well suspension bridges are actually the safest type there is in terms of strength and flexibility to loads.I couldn't stop watching it, saw the whole episode, that kind of stuff fascinates me. Now I know something about that bridge. Although I have to wonder if they ever close down the inside lane cause we had a bridge here that was metal grating and in the winter it would freeze pretty bad and turn into an ice rink.

I have crossed the bridge in the past. It has been a few years but it is on my way to the north shores of lake Superior. I like the wind warnings on the bridge and that empty trucks should not go over the bridge.

I have crossed this bridge many times. I have walked across it 26 of the last 28 Labor Day's. Labor Day is the only day that pedestrians are allowed.

Quote, originally posted by michaelgt »Labor Day is the only day that pedestrians are allowed. It's too bad so many major bridges lack pedestrian (and bicycle) access. But the trend may be changing. Until recently the only big bridge in our SF Bay area with a walkway was the Golden Gate, but now the bridge to Vallejo has one and the Benicia bridge will as well in another year.I can verify the possible windiness of the Mackinac bridge - crossing it in a 2000 lb car with an 18' boat on the roof made that apparent.

I love those shows as well...I think there was a Dirty Jobs episode where they were doing some maintence on the bridge such as painting and changing really high light bulbs.

Ahhh Mike Rowe--I'm SO gonna marry that man some day. I haven't been up that far, but that is a vacation I would LOVE to take! I would love to see the UP of Michigan...maybe some day.

i think it would be neat to drive it, however we opted not to when we went to MAck Island last summer. hubby is not a big bridge person.it's really neat to see it tho from the ferry boats.

Here's a picture I took this summer from St. Ignace side of the bridge. My kids and I were on top of a tourist trap tower right off U.S. 2. It was a cloudy day so I'm not sure how it will come out. I'm also not sure how well the attachment will come through (or if it will come through). Mike
