I love how they say in the little engine window..."Our variable valve.....blah blah blah...is fuel efficient....."As if it's not Toyota 4-cyl thats in 25% of economy cars yousee on the road today....(Corolla / Matrix / Vibe / Scion xD )Like they developed it or something...

ummm 25% of 4cyl on the road today are Toyota? documents please.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable_valve_timingFiat was the first auto manufacturer to patent a functional variable valve timing system which included variable lift. Developed by Giovanni Torazza in the late 1960s, In September 1975, General Motors patented a system intended to vary valve lift. GM was interested in throttling the intake valves in order to reduce emissions. This was done by minimizing the amount of lift at low load to keep the intake velocity higher, thereby atomizing the intake charge. GM encountered problems running at very low lift, and abandoned the project.Toyota didn't bring one out till 1992.

Variable valve control is now apparently offered in the full size trucks with the 6.2L engine. Part of the reason that they abandoned the project in the 70's is that they were trying to use the oil pressure to control the system and not electronics. From what a guy told me it is so much easier to control the valves if it has the over head cam engine. Are they starting to cut back on some of the stuff that used to come with the car. Things like the roof bars and the rear cargo cover?

What I'm trying to say is that Pontiac makes NO MENTION on thier website that they contracted theToyota 1.8L for use in the Vibe....I just it humorous that they said "our motor" in thebrochure and website...jeez....and the 25% was a stab at all the smallToyotas you see on the road....deep breaths now
