Thinking of getting a set of Thule 450 legs & crossbars for my wife's vibe, as well as a Thule 682 cargo box. Looks like there shouldnt be any problems with that size box besides having to remove the antenna to mount it (I have Sirius so dont really care about the stock antenna). I'd like to hear of anyone running a cargo box on top of their car, how it affected mileage, driving, etc.nothing came up with search, but pics would be cool and your set up This is a Thule 682, measures 54"x15"x25"
Haven't used a cargo box, but we did make a long trip with a big boxy 8' long couch on the top. It dropped the mileage from 40 down to 32 mpg. Ran into one stretch with really strong crosswinds and the gusts were certainly noticeable, but never felt unsafe. The cargo box shown is a lot smaller and more aerodynamic than our couch so I'd expect it to have much less of an effect on the mileage. We used the GM 'Utility Bar' crossbars since they were less expensive than what the Thule dealers quoted and looked like they'd be compatible with all the same accessories.
Just saw this post...We sometimes use a Yakima Space Cadet (15 cu ft) and it rides fine. Only used it a couple times on the Vibe; usually it sits on our RAV4.The standard cross bars work fine. I do have to disconnect the bullet FM antenna, but we usually listen to XM or my PDA/jukebox on road trips anyway.
I have a Yakima rack and I have a Karrite roof top carrier which is actually made by Thule but is way cheaper than a Thule branded box. It is 20 cubic feet and holds a TON of stuff. The Vibes' roof weight limit is 75 pounds so it's pretty easy to max it out. I'll take a picture and post it soon.
I have a the GM (Thule) bars with a 16 cu. ft box - I also have to remove my antenna but since we mostly listen to our Ipod, it doesn't really matter. Second pic is our SportRack carriers with both bikes
I use a soft bag style carrier from Highland: http://www.highlandinteractive...o_id=It has 15cu. ft. of space, does not require antenna removal and folds up for storage. It is truly waterproof. I've driven through heavy rain with it and everything stayed nice and dry. I do use a piece of 1/4" plywood inside so everything rests on the crossbars and doesn't scratch the roof.
