Vibe newbie, should I buy the extended warranty? (05 w/18k miles)

Post by wisvibe »

I am now a Vibe owner (since Friday) and bought an 05 w/18,000 miles. The dealer of course recommended the extended warranty. I bought it with the understanding I can cancel it within the 1st. month. The warranty is through "Advantage". It cost 250/yr. for 4 yrs. or 75,000 miles. What are the Vibes weaknesses? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

FIRST>>> WELCOMEwhat type of vibe? base?GT?AWD?Standard trans?Auto Trans? If its a base... the list is short... not to many things go wrong with the yoda engine.GT... about the bigest complaint is the clutch going on the transmissionAWD... being they don't make them after the 2006 model it will be a bit more expensive to maintain the car. The rear differental is about the only thing that some have experienced problems with and thats only because of lack of upkeep. And one last thing I forgot... tires... our vibes love to eat threw tires... don't expect to get the recommended millage out of a set of tires if you plan on keeping it for a long time and want peice of mine.. keep the warr... but most don't because of the HIGH reliablity of the car.O, and before anyone else says it...... post photos for us

Sorry bout that...My Vibe is the base w/auto. Looking through the treads, looks like there are some trans issues and some problems with the windows? I'm still not sure if I should keep the extended warr. for the $1,000 it will cost me.

imo, my mechanics opinion and consumer reports, the extended warranty through a dealer is not a good idea. In most cases you wont end up using it, theres always a lemon car but you should see a failure of something then by the standard warranty. I bought my car with 26k miles on it and its at 50 now with no issue. Just make sure before your standard warranty expires that you get it checked out. I just bought mine to the dealer at 36k and said oh its squeeking and not shifting right (i made that up so they could check it under warranty). so they checked the whole car, found nothing wrong. Just make sure to do your annual maintenance listed in the owners manual and you will probably be fine Welcome to genvibe! and if you get any time post some pics of your vibe :D

Extended warranty is a waste of money. Put that 1000 in the bank. You won't have 1k worth of warranty problems. If you have any problems they would happen before your orgiinal warranty expires. I have only known one person on the site that truly had a lemon, Colonel Panic.

Thanks for the advice. I'll call the dealer this week to cancel the warranty. Here's a couple pics of it.

Good choice to cancel. They will try very hard to keep you. It's rumored that all off brand warranties are worthtless. If you really feel a need for one only buy the genuine GM Warranty.

I had one for my Civic. Not worth the cash. Sure they covered cost of diagnosis and what not when you brought it in, but for all the problems I had with that engine and oil burning, they never fixed it so it was not worth it. I didn't get one when I got the Matrix. I bought it CPO so it came with 7yr. 100k powertrain and it's a Yota so I'm not worried.

Like the others have said, the 3rd party extended warranties aren't worth the paper they were written on. The GM one is definitely the way to go (MajorGuard is what I've bought twice in the past, been great both times.) The GM warranty is cool since you know you're covered coast to coast, you don't have to worry about whether someone in whatever town you may be in will honor the warranty. You have until 36K to make up your mind... The price of the GM warranty goes up as you get closer to your factory warranty running out, but you still have the chance to get the warranty if you so choose. If your car looks to be ok, probably don't have to mess with it. If you sense you're going to have problems, sure - get it!
