I'm really interested in getting an RX8. What is everyone's feelings on the rotary engine? Do you think it will hold up or is this going to be expensive to own? I looked at the 350Z, but with my S-Plan discount I can get a RX8 for around $25k once they are common on the lots.
I think it would be a fairly reliable engine. I know now that they've moved the intake and exhaust on the engine, they've solved the emissions and fuel economy issues they used to have. My concern would be maintenance costs, since this is going to be the first rotary powered vehicle in the US in quite some time, parts will likely be pretty expensive. I suppose you won't have to worry about that with the warranty, but once that runs out... Another question is, it's a normally aspirated engine. The larger available engine puts out almost as much HP as the old twin turbo RX-7, but like the Toyota 2zz, the torque is weak making it necessary to stay in the higher revs. The part I'm not sure about is whether or not there would be a possibility for forced induction or if similar issues to the 2zz would arise here as well. Now, inspite of all that, I love the car and absolutely think if you can get one you should!
If I do end up getting one, just stop by and I'll let you check it out. I know what you mean about torque, but after watching the C&D review on tv, I fell in love. The car seemed very well balanced and running the revs up is so much smoother than our cars. Actually they installed a buzzer that lets you know when you get close to redline because the engine sounds the same at 4k as 9k. I also like the fact that it has four usable seats. They might be tight, but kids can get back there plus they have doors. I also love how they setup the tach/speedo. Unlike our cars where the tach is hard to see when you have your hand at anything greater than 9 o'clock, they have their tach centered with a digital speed on the same guage. I'm not sure if I want to get the upgraded package with leather, bigger brakes, and the extras. That adds about $4k to the car, but really makes the car complete. Whatever the choice is, I'll save for a year or so and then jump on it.
I'd certainly take you up on the offer to stop and see it, but I'm moving to Montana at the end of march. Doh! I watched the C&D review too. That's what I was so impressed with on the rotary though, it's perfectly smooth. I had a friend of mine with a twin turbo RX-7 that he let me drive once (and did I ever have to beg for that opportunity ) and except for the exhaust noise you almost couldn't tell it was running. I hope the RX-8 catches on and hangs in there. Maybe we'll see a rotary powered MP-5 before long. Now that would be fun! I don't know if I would do the leather and upgrades either. I think the car would be fine as is. That would be $4000 you could spend on tricking out the engine a little. Good luck on the purchase. You'll have to post some pictures when you get it.

I was always a fan of the Z-series, and I know little about the RX rotary engines other than the high repair costs and great performance. I just think the new Z has a lot more class, and is sleek as heck looks-wise.
