I have a 03 vibe awd with 117000 miles on it. Car is at the trans shop where they say it needs a new/rebuilt tranny at acost of 3500.00. Has anyone replaced one of these on there own? Thanks for any help or advise.
I burned my auto tranny out within 6 months of installing the supercharger. But I also drove the crap out of it on a regular basis. Had mine rebuild with an adjustable racing shift kit and had the torque converter rebuilt with a 2800rpm stall. Total cost was around $3000. Needs a little tweaking, but well worth it! Shifts are much faster and harder. It's 'guarenteed' up to 500hp. Whatever that means. I tried to get a matrix xrs auto tranny but those are too hard to find with all the peices and harnes.

Thanks for the reply, been feelin like mine was the only ride that the tranny ever went out on. Is yours an AWD ? Did you r&r the trans yourself, and where can a guy find out about upgrades for this trans? Lastly the super charger looks tough, bet it is hard to keep your foot out of it!!
Lancer's car is a Base, not AWD. For you I'd recommend going to a Transmission shop. They could fix your tranny or make it tougher for cheaper than what you were quoted. If you went to a dealer they're just going to replace the tranny most likely. I know a few transmissions had issues with a Solenoid getting clogged up..... that is why I got mine flushed but I'm still not happy with the shift quality that much. Level10, a online tranny company, will sell you upgrade kits or a fully modified tranny. Do a search for them in Google.
If you are just looking at getting the thing back on the road as fast and cheap as possible, you might try a junkyard for a replacement tranny, would probably come with some short warranty, and would probably be cheaper than 3500 to buy it and have it installed. That is just one other option to consider, what you should do depends on a lot of things. I replaced my failed 5 speed with one from a junkyard, and so far I have put about 58K miles on this junkyard tranny.
After some research decided to let the trans pros r&r the trans, got 3 yr 75000 mile warrenty, best I could find. So now time to work alittle ot and get it back on the road. Thanks to you guys for the posts!!
