I made White Gauges

Post by SeattleJeremy »

I Love White Gauge Overlays. I have a thing for them, what can I say. Heck I've got a site dedicated to making Heater Panel Overlays http://www.alloverlays.comSo I decided to test my hand at these. Before purchasing the gauges to make the overlay I was a little concerned the tinted plastic would be too dark. I still have my doubts, but I won't know until they are installed in the car. Here's what I started with. Happy Birthday GenVibe :DThe gauges I bought are in Really good condition, next to no dust at all. That made it easy to scan in.Applied heavy amounts of Photoshop, Printing and cutting skills and here's the final product. Some of the edges are a bit wonkie, but the copy won't be installed in my car. I'll play around with it a bit more. Here's a picture of the overlay I had in my last car.Enjoy, and have a Good Friday everyone -Jeremy

So how did you do it? That is the big question. They look good though, I like your old car with the palm trees, lol.... very pimp. Also, how easy is it to see the dummy lights coming through, like the blinkers and highbeam and all that?

If they are compatible with the Trix which I think they may be, Ill def. take a set. Would you be able to have the Matrix name in its font put in silver or black on them too. I got a slick idea to make it light up from behind witha nice red led and some opaque covering.

Thanks for the support everyone. The indicator lights should shine just fine though the overlay because of the material it's made of. Hopefully there will be night pictures up this weekend. I might sell these on Alloverlays.com but that depends on how well they work. If I do, they will fit the 05-07 Vibes and Matrix Base, AWD, and XR models. silvrhawk7 : I'm still working on Color Combinations.

Is it just me or would the Yo! dummy lights just be a lit bulb, Unless you incorporated the outlines on to the new overlay? The manuf outlines are not blacked out, as yours are blacked "whited" out. I guess I will wait like the rest and see the nighttime photos. It is a very good start

If the white material is opaque enough you should be able to see through it.But Yeah, some night shots would clear this up.

As promised Night PicturesHere it is with the Flash on Got a few angles with the flash off. I was up late last night putting these together so I didn't have time to put adhesive all the way around the gauges. That's why a few places look a bit fuzzy. Future versions will have the "RPM" in red. Mrizzle05, The next set will have some more graphics. I like plain and simple stuff but this might be too little even for me. Custom graphics will absolutely be available.Vibr8tr, sorry trade secret. Keithvibe, The overlay is made to go over the stock paneling. As seen in the pictures the dummy lights light up they shine though the stock shape. Please let me know what you think. -Jeremy

Part of the Blurriness is my camera. It's a simple point and shoot and doesn't do very well at night. The other part is the White areas of the Gauge cluster are showing around the Red part of the overlay. At he top of the speedo the overlay is slighly lifted off the cluster. It looks better in person The plan this weekend is to install a new set of overlays with the proper amount of adhesive. If that goes well I'll take real pictures, day and night. And post them up. Don't worry Mrizzle your first in line.Sorry ALKGT, maybe I can work on your Subaru next

I see how ya did it now.. i though you were replacing the entire guage overlay.. I see now that all you did was ad another layer... Now all ya need to do is get it to light up at night. I used to have a 94 cavalier that had color changing face guages... I could choose what color it would glow at night... red, blue, purple ect....

Like I said, I would def. get a set. I would want it to look the same at night as stock does but I like the daytime white.Could you make one so the kmph are covered up and on the portion above the speed needle there have the Matrix name in its font like the cars emblem, that way I could have it shine red!

what you can do joe if you really want it done..is find a junkyard with a vibe..same year as yours or whatever..and take the cluster out of it..so you have that as the one to do the white gauges..if it works out..then great..if it doesnt..then you dont ruin your original cluster

Just pull the rings off, remove 1 Phillips head screw (top), push on the two metal clips (bottom), pull the gauge cluster out, and disconnect the cable cluster(s). Then taking the protective plastic off gauges is quite easy too. I’ll have a installation guide with pictures. Update on this Project. I've had a set of overlays in my Vibe for about 3 weeks, and I need the community's help. The "smoked" plastic makes the White portions of the overlay impossible to see when it's not in direct sunlight (or camera flash). I've been kicking around a few ways to fix this, but have not found one I like or know how to implement. 1. Remove the smoke plastic cover. (not ideal but will work) 2. Have a new clear plastic cover made, using Vacuum molding? (expensive and time consuming)3. Cut out the middle of the stock smoke plastic and insertglue curved clear plastic in it's place. (time consuming, and would need tools for this)Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

other sites load nice and fast for me today, but the site you have the pictures loaded on is terrible slow, took over ten minutes to load this one image, so I uploaded it here. Are the hard to see white portions the parts that actually light up, or are they the general background face of the gauge? Do you have any non-flash pictures of the gauges in use, perhaps with and without the smoked plastic cover? Maybe upload them to genvibe? I don't know which of those options i would do. Another would be to add some sort of general backlighting to the light up the entire face. Not sure that is any better than the three you posted.

if a gt set ever get made im first for those. i have been thinking about tinkering with my gauges to turn them white.i would have to agree with "joatmon" on maybe lighting up the entire face leds are cheap. i know somewhere you can get 20 with resistors for like $7 shipped

i think the easiest way to do it rain is use a fork..or 2 butter knifes or something along those lines..and push up on both sides..i knew a guy that used to do this same thing but changed the bulbs inside the cluster to LEDs and whatever color you wantedi'd like to change the lights inside to LEDs..if they arent already and to change them to blue since it looks awesome and will match my car nicely
