This is so sad. Luckily my cat food is not affected. We give them Iams dry food and Iams website said it was only canned or the wet treats that are affected.

Yes, dry is best...none of that 'mystery meat' and easier cleanups! Years ago, before I knew better, bought my girl a can of 'mighty dog' and found a fleshy tube...I was so freaked out, threw it out and never bought any kind of non-dry food again!
I was surprised how many different brands of pet food come from the same processor. It makes me wonder how different they are. I can't wait until the next time I corner the Nutro rep. at Care-A-Lot. I'm not going to be happy if i find out I'm paying extra money if Nutro is the same thing as Ol' Roy.

My dog is safe, I don't let him have the moist stuff often, he hasn't had any since last fall. Iams dry food for toy & small breeds is what he gets. Everything is fine here, but I worry for many dogs and cats out there!

Just because it was made at the same plant doesn't necessarily make it the same stuff. I once toured a Coca Cola bottling plant and on that day, they weren't bottling coke - it was the grape sam's choice stuff for wal*mart. On Iam's site, they had a little blurb about it:http://us.iams.com/iams/global/Product_Recall.htmQuote »You may wonder why some “wet” food was produced at Menu Foods. In fact, virtually every pet food company commonly uses outside partners for special or small volume items. Nonetheless, the different branded products made by Menu are not “the same”. Our Iams and Eukanuba pet foods have unique recipes and important ingredient differences that distinguish them from other pet food brands.I'm pretty sure they're telling the truth. If you start feeding your dog the cheaper stuff, I'm sure that you'll notice a difference. It's been an interesting year for us, huge recalls - the acetaminophen, the peanut butter, now this... So many different varieties of stuff that we use every day is made by not as many companies as we would think....

RAT POISON?????http://www.nbc11.com/news/11347212/detail.html#As a Yorkie lover, that poor Yorkie, Pebbles, in the pic almost made me cry when I saw her in another article earlier in the morning. She's gone now. This is so sad... I ran across a site today that people can post if they lost their pet, the details of the food they were eating, and the contact information for their vet... They have on record 1,000 pets that have lost their lives so far. I wish I could find the link to that site. Hug your pets tonight! What the hell country are they getting these ingredients from that has this poison that is banned here anyway? Sons of *****es...

Mine did too, he loved that stuff. I would mix it in with his regular dry food for a special "treat." I'll be damned if I ever do that again.I'm about at the point where I want to start learning about doggie nutrition to make the proper meals and cook him some food my own damn self so I know what goes into it. He'll surely be eating better than me, I bet.The real kicker is, since pets are viewed as "belongings" by so many, there won't be much help for the owners who have lost bigtime.... Bring on the law suits, but too bad those who deserve it won't get much. To me, a pet IS family, I'll be the first to say I view my lil' Yorkie, Bean, as a son.

Holy crap... The video here http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/st...43788 states that the pesticide was on wheat imported from CHINA. The chemical is illegal to use here as a pesticide...How the hell is it possible for things to be more economical for this company to import wheat from China to their plant in Kansas or whatever? I'm sure there is plenty to be found right there in their own backyard, the tightasses.

exactly, i have no kids, maggie is my only child, and is treated accordingly.if that happened to her, i would sue for everything i could, not that that would make it better, but i'd make them pay.

What kind of sucks here is that the company responsible won't be the one most likely found culpable. The real party responsible here is the company that sold Menu Foods the wheat. The FDA has strict regulations about what farmers can and can't use on their crops here in the states. Unfortunately, they often don't have the same requirements of the imported products, depending on the usage.Things classified as livestock feed (which likely includes things designated for pet food use) probably don't need to meet the same federal guide lines as things intended for human consumption (which, as we've seen, are pretty weak to begin with).I've never really understood how a company can be held legally liable for something when they haven't broken any laws. But, in this day of big trial lawyers, somebody has to pay. And, they'll usually jury shop until they find one that will make somebody pay, regardless.
Why wouldn't she be awarded damages for the dog getting sick? The way I understood it, because pets are considered property, they would be able to sue for the vet bills but not for personal pain and suffering.
Quote, originally posted by TJinPgh »What kind of sucks here is that the company responsible won't be the one most likely found culpable. The real party responsible here is the company that sold Menu Foods the wheat. While true, Menu Foods was responsible for the end product... Which means they should have a:) purchased the ingredients from reputable soruces, and b:) at least SOME testing should have taken place on said ingredients AND finished product. AND when the company started seeing problems with the product in February, they should have come forth with the information THEN instead of waiting an entire month before saying anything about it! I say whoever is affected by this should have the right to sue their nads off. From what I've read on the matter, Menu Foods has been in trouble financially for the last few years... They're up to their eyeballs in debt, they haven't been able to pay their shareholders anything for the last few years, etc. When a company is strapped for cash, they're going to cut corners, and in that case they obviously did with substandard ingredients.I feel sad for everyone affected by this. And sorry that the media has been severely misreporting this whole ordeal, damn the AP. Everywhere you read, such and such's pet from whatever town died due to eating tainted food, yet the stupid crap the AP puts out still shows, what, 14 deaths or whatever? That's BS. I finally saw an article that listed 400-something this morning. The Pet Connection has tracked 1700+ deaths thus far. Truly sad. Anyway, just goes to show how vulnerable our food supply is - people food, animal food, or otherwise. Imagine how big of a deal this would be had this crap gotten into the HUMAN food supply, I'm sure many would be thinking different about it and taking it more seriously, huh???

in my mind, noone should be compensated for eating the food themselves. it is a widely known fact that pet food is not fit for human consumption.losing a pet causes pain and suffering does it not?of course if there is a suit, the lawyers will make millions and the pet owners will get a free can of dog food.

Assuming a full recovery, there's nothing else...EDIT: Actually, their negligent use of tainted wheat could bring a HUGE puntive judgement against them. So, in that sense, owners may receive more compensation.
Most of these pets are dying or staying very sick...I haven't heard of very many making full recoveries yet. Kidney damage isn't exactly fixable, unfortunately.
GREAT!!!! Now, the Melamine that was found in the Wheat Gluten has been found in Rice Protein concentrate. It was found in Natural Balance Venison dry and canned dog food and cat food. I just switched to Natural Balance 2 weeks ago. I almost got the Venison!! I opted for the lamb instead, thank god. But I will be switching brands again soon.
