Add AUX input or just buy new head unit? Opinions anyone?

Post by Smitty »

Here's my dilemma: I want to add an AUX input to play my non-ipod MP3 player. I've read all about the different ways I can add an aux input to my stock 2003 Vibe head unit, via AUX2CAR and the like. From what I can tell, these solutions will run me $60-$80 and require me to do the install myself, which is a dangerous proposition since I have no mechanical/electrical skills to speak of. I know the posts say it is very easy to do, but removing my stereo and splicing wires is way out of my league -- and it is not something I would remotely enjoy. So I'm thinking -- why not just buy a brand new head-unit with an AUX input already built in from say, Best Buy or somewhere? The only downside I see is the additional cost of the head unit, which will likely run me $120 to $150. I like the stock head unit just fine, but I'm not super attached to it. So here's my question. Are there any benefits I might be unaware of in regards to keeping the OEM headunit? Am I likely to lose any sound quality by buying a new head unit? Any other benefits of the OEM head unit I should take into account? If I buy a new stereo, I'm leaning towards the Sony CDXGT400 so I can keep the red lighting consistent on my dash. Anyone have any experience with this stereo? Thanks for the input!Smitty

I'm in nearly the same situation you are. The difference is I have a stock 6 CD changer, so an auxiliary is not an option if I want to keep the stock HU. I thought about putting in an after market Sony HU with an aux. in the front, but with the install not being covered by a pro installer concerns me, seeing that I have your skills and concerns as well! The biggest hit you will take is the extra fee ($100) they charge for "bypassing" the extra amp, if you have it under the passenger seat. With my limited install knowledge, I still think this is ridiculous! But, that is only if you have Moon and Tunes/Monsoon.If you go to a Circuit City or Best Buy, the only fee they will cover is the $35-40 labor fee. The kit and wiring is extra, so the price point you are making of the AUX kit vs. a new HU should include the extra fees. I'm just as bummed as you because my MP3 and Sirius sound quality sucks with the FM transmitters!

Go aftermarket new head unit. Simple, cheap and clean.Installing a new head unit is not a difficult challenge. You will also need a right aftermarket harness and plastic housing (30-40$), as well as the wiring layout (available here ... somewhere) and a a couple of tools...I wouldn't splurg on an expensive head unit that plays MP3s, your aux in will do that. I don't play CDs anymore, just my Nano. I got the base Sony for 100CDN and it works great. andrew

I don't know if the aux2car will work on an 03 radio, some have said it won't, can't remember the final verdict.I bought a replacement off ebay, a combo CD/cassette unit from an 03/04 Matrix. Looks like the Vibe 1CD head unit, but has a tape deck also. I got it pretty cheap, and use one of those cassette adapter things to connect to my non-ipod MP3 player. Audio quality is probably not as good as a true hardwire, but it works plenty fine for me. My brother bought an 05 vibe, and I did the same for him. There are a couple on ebay now, but the sellers want more than they are worth. Here is a pic of one, newer Matrix CD/cassette radios look noticeably different and will not just plug in to a VIbeBut it should not be too hard to get a nice aftermarket radio in there. Do you have the Moon&Tunes package?

I just installed my AUX input last week, and it was easy and sounds ok. Nothing super, but ALOT better than a FM transmitter. The down side is it was $60, and that is alot. If you are thinking of doing any other stereo mods down the road, than go with a new HU, but all you want is an AUX input, and aren't going to do anything more down the road..... than just spend the $60, and the 15 minutes to install the AUX-GM12 or whatever the part number is (I would have to look). I know with some MP3 players my doesn't sound that good, but mine sounds good.
