a lucky viber

http://www.santacruzsentinel.c...t.htmbasically, a belted in rear passenger in a Vibe was thrown from the vehicle and wasn't hurt as bad as one might expectQuote »Scotts Valley football star injured in return from recruiting tripBy JIM SEIMASSentinel staff writerScotts Valley High standout football player Russell Jenkins, and his father, Ed, were involved in a major two-vehicle crash on a remote stretch of Highway 8 outside San Diego early Sunday morning. Both are in good health. The Jenkinses were returning from a recruiting trip at Arizona Western College in Yuma, Ariz., where Russell had given the school's head coach a verbal commitment."It was NASCAR-type stuff," Russell said. "I'm lucky to be alive"The Jenkinses said their car was hit from behind at a high speed and rolled several times on Highway 8.Ed suffered a broken clavicle, four broken ribs and a bruised lung in the wreck. Russell, who was ejected from the vehicle, has seven staples in his head, possibly a broken toe and abrasions on his arm and back.Russell was airlifted to nearby Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego; Ed was taken via ambulance. Both were released later Sunday. Russell has missed four days of school this week."It happened so quick and fast, I was upside down when the car stopped rolling," Ed said of his initial reaction. "The first thing I did was call for Russell. He didn't answer. He was on the road wrapped in a blanket. Someone put it over him. I didn't know what the status was"The accident took place around 7:30 a.m. Russell, asleep in the back seat while his father drove, was thrown from the family's 2004 Pontiac Vibe despite wearing his seat belt."That pretty much saved his life," Ed said. "Our car pretty much tore open like a sardine can. It was pretty intense"Ed said he was driving the speed limit [65 mph] in the slow lane when his car was struck. He said the Vibe was knocked onto a hill to the right of the highway and rolled an estimated three to five times after it was hit by a Mazda Miata. The Miata ended up a quarter mile down the highway, Ed said.Ed Jenkins, who has a preliminary accident report, said some people at the scene estimated the Miata to be traveling in excess of 100 mph.Russell, who is 6-foot-4, 250 pounds, was an all-Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League and all- S.C. County first-team selection at linebacker. He also played tight end and running back. The 17-year-old said he was awoken by the screeching of tires before his father's car was rear-ended. He said he was unconscious when he flew through one of the Vibe's windows. He doesn't know which one."For being ejected from a car, to only suffer a few bumps and bruises, a few this and a few that, he was a walking miracle," Ed said. "That's what everyone was saying down there""Compared to what it could have been, God was on my side definitely," Russell said.CHP officials from the El Cahon office said the accident report is incomplete. They were only able to confirm the date and location of the accident and that there were no fatalities.

You'd figure the miata would have blown up in a million pieces when it hit the vibe.I'm going to watch out for those little critters from now on.
