Just got a new mono Satellite Vibe this week. Love the car. The nav system is great. Does anyone know how often the DVDs are updated? Also, has anyone figured out how to hack the system so it can play movies. If anyone is considering a Vibe with nav, I would highly recommend it.
First, you CANNOT hack the system so that it can play movies. It is a DVD-ROM unit, and reads data, just like the CD-ROM in your computer reads data. "But," you say, "I can play music CD's in my PC, why can't I play movie DVD's in my car?" The answer is that your PC has an audio card. The DVD nav system would need an MPEG decoder and video output circuitry, neither of which it has.And secondly, I'll IM you privately about your other question. - Earl

Neat nav system feature.... if you go into the "DEST" (Destination) menu and then select the "Emergency" icon, the system will show you your current position in latitude and longitude coordinates. Very helpful in case you need to call for help on your cellular phone! - Earl

Plus I think some places have laws against having "TV screens" where the driver can see them. Basically, they don't want the driver to be able to watch tv and drive at the same time. But wait..... what about those bling bling rides I see on MTV Cribs. Those have TV's in the dash. Well, those are all aftermarket modifications and are not sold out of the factory that way. They are also probably somewhat illegal for the reasons I discussed above. (just like blue lights on those ricers, those are most likely illegal as well)

You are correct. But an exception has been carved out for nav systems, which are becoming more and more popular. I have a friend in Germany with a BMW... 8-series, I think. Its nav system has a TV tuner built-in, so you can watch TV off-the-air!!! But, the feature disables itself if the car is in motion, so this is only available if you're stopped. - ESJ
