I have a 2003 pontiac vibe and in when i shift to 3rd gear it grinds, but if i slowly ease it in third it doesnt grind. I am curious what is wrong and what parts do i need to fix it thanks
Hey...Do you have a GT or Base? As CAN-AWD-VIBE eluded to, there are many posts about the 5spd issues and some about the 6spd. I have the 6spd and the gears have always been clunky, sometimes a grind going into R, 1,3,5. I have tried a variety of gear oils (from Mobil One 75w90 to Redline 75w90 and 75w80) the Redline MTL is what I have in there now and it's quite smooth through the gears when it's warm but I still get an occasional clunk.I sometimes thought, at least in the 6spd, that it was the motion from going <down-left> to <center-up> which caused the clunk/grind. I do notice the grind doesn't happen (or maybe I don't notice it) when going from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 4th. In any case, you could try a full synth gear oil (I don't recommend the Mobile One for cold temps) or just read some of the other posts to see what is discussed there.Dave

YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!
glad you searched and found us here... now it's time for you to search inside our site for you answers. (search "5 speed")You have an internal tranny problem and they are well documented on this site.Your thread title pretty much sums up your repairs You will probably need to rebuild or replace the tranny, and you might as well take care of the clutch at the same time.again sorry about the bad news.

I have a 5 speed vibe, and have had tranny troubles, but never any synchro problems, and the only time I grind gears is when I get careless and mis-clutch. Not saying the grinding is your fault, just that I haven't had synchro problems in my vibe transmissions. Those of us here who have had tranny problems seem to lose bearings. How many miles on the car? Your symptoms sound synchro related. A gear oil change is the easiest and lowest cost potential fix, so I'd try that first. and welcome to genvibe
