I just got my oil changed at the dealership and found something out very interesting. They said that if I wanted to supply the oil and filter, they would charge me $8.95 plus tax. As that I do not have the facilities to do my own oil change and lube, plus their synthetic oil change costs $60+, I thought this would be a good alternative when I want to switch to synthetic (which will probably be around 10,000 miles). Also the up side is I will know EXACTLY what filter and oil they use. Plus I won't have to worry about disposal of the old filter and oil. I was planning to go with Mobil 1 full synthetic and either a Mobil 1 or K/N oil filter. Any opinions?

That sounds like a fair enough price to me. I used to get mine done for something like $12.99 at the Pontiac dealer, that was with me bringing in the oil and them supplying the filter. The regular oil and filter change was $19.99. Going to Mobil 1 was something like 50 bucks, I was stupid enough to have them do it once and they charged me for 5 quarts of oil when technically it didn't even need 4. Bringing your own stuff is good, that way you know what goes into it. If the dealer can handle the request, you're good. Sadly though, for me at least, the competence of this whole "bring your own bottle" thing is a bit lacking out there. Many times I've went out to the car after they were done and after repeatedly advising the service guys to use my stuff, I still find my oil sitting there. If they actually remembered to use my stuff, then the lady at the cashier window wants me to pay her money for all of their oil that was used . Uh, no! The question of whether they will use your oil is a good one. The oil changin' guy could always steal your stuff and put it in his car and fill yours up with the flavor of the month crap. I always use dino juice so if somebody wants to steal that from me, they've got problems. If I brought in some expensive stuff, I'd ask for the empty bottles back. That's still far from foolproof, the guy can still scam ya by pouring your oil into some other container and giving you the empties back. Bummer that it isn't always easy to see what they're doing. Although I've been to a couple where you can see what is going on.

i do this at walmart! I bring my own oil and filter and let them do the labor and i can watch them.Only once did they not use the filter and i called them out on it right away and they fixed it. I think the guy in the pit just forgot or something. the last time I did it It was like $8.77 + $20. (4qts. of Mobil 1 5w30) + (whatever i paid for the Pure 1 filter). Its sad i have to get my oil changes done through several different stores to get the best price.
jeez you guys... mistakes happen.the oil change "kids" at the dealer do 20-30 LOF's a day, maybe 1 or 2 customer supplied parts. If you dont see "use customer supplied parts" on the work order that YOU sign then it will not get done that way. Just make sure you see that and if they screw it up just go back and they should fix it right away.As far as the oil and filter choices go... Mobil rules and the filter should be OEM- IMO
