*Gasp!* A Real Rex Killer!

Post by AKLGT »

and you thought I'd never say it! that SOMETHING might possible be th3 fast3r of the almighty WRX! stock for stock (not the Sti), but the Evo9 most definitely WINS over a rex. yes, i said it! i even TYPED it out for you all! the almighty subaru can be beat!Granted, I'm still not a fan of the exterior styling, too boy ricer for my tastes (i'm getting older now). so i go to Carl's Jr to get some lunch and see one of my subie buddy's car outside. i decide to go in. he and another subie guy are sitting there having lunch while his STi is getting work done. i'd just come from the dealership and saw it there in the back...so we're joking around and talking and we decide it would be fun to go and just test drive the new Evo9. why not? i wanted to know what all the fuss was about because i'm not too fond of the styling or what not. so we figure we'll go over there. we had to pick up Brandon's Sti and i needed to go see if i could find the wheel lock for my rims so PHil could work on the LGT. I was driving the vibe.we head over to the dealership and talk to one of the sales girls. very nice. i tell her i want to take the evo9 MR (nicer and 6MT) for a spin to find out about all the fuss. she looks at the vibe and probably thinking... um ok. she says, you have to pass the credit check first and get pre-approved in order to drive one. i say, ok, that's fine. i slap down my paystub from yesterday.they run the pwk, and say ok.. away we go. Well, Brandon left because he needed to get his tires done and we were still doing the paperwork, but my buddy, Brian (just turned 18) wanted to hitch a ride. no way he would qualify for an Evo since he has no credit and sorta has a job. The salesman drives the car off the lot until we get downtown where we swap drivers. he says it's ok to let Brian drive too, which made his day. LOLI get in and buckle up. the Recaro leather and suede seats were very nice, held you in tight but lacked true harnesses (this will come handy later in the story), interior was a lot nicer than i thought. i make my way out of the parking lot onto the streets, it's midday and there is plenty of traffic. I find an open lane at the lights, no one in front. light turns green and i PUNCH IT! bam! 6000 rpm and shift! 6000 rpm and shift! all the way up to 6th gear.... but i slowed it way down because cops like to hang out in that area we were quickly approaching. practically NO turbo lag that i could feel. 1 and 2 pulled just as hard as my LGT but once i hit 3 and 4th, it kept going where as my LGT would be starting to slow. i take it around some corners nice and tight, we're whipping all over the place. very very nice. handled fantastic, tires stuck to the ground.we get to another area and i pull over and let Brian drive. he wants to know how the car handles as he loves to rally (he's crazy). this is the part that everyone wished we had harnesses to hold us in the seats more. so, he's just slaloming imaginary cones in the middle of this empty residential road... getting a feel how the car handles. i'm sliding around in my seat a little, but not too terrible. we head on out to one of the round abouts in town and we're doing figure 8's as fast as we can in traffic.... wow! car still felt like it was on the ground.we then head back and have to switch drivers because Brian isn't really supposed to drive the car. we stop over at my office and my boss was there. he's just laughing.... when we get back to the dealership, the sales girl asks what i think. i tell her i'm very impressed, not at all what i was thinking it would be. they have 13 of these bad boys to sell and are quite motivated. i tell her, it's a little ways off in the future but i had to admit i did like the car, color, performance, etc. might have to bring the hubby for a test drive... so you never know. really, i doubt i'd buy one, but i was thoroughly impressed for sure. i have yet to drive an STi so i cannot really compare it to a stock Sti, they will not allow you to test drive unless you BUY the car and it is now yours. i am still working on trying to con someone into letting me drive theirs.i also want to test drive the new 07 Spec B as that's what i plan to replace the LGT with next fall at the same time we get Phil's STi. however, for the price, the evo9 is quite impressive... very tempting! still, it'll be a family of subies... LOL. gotta support the company that employs the hubby and pays the bills! all in all, for anyone who IS interested in an AWD turbo'd performance sedan, the Evo9 is quite impressive and for the price, very reasonable (not including the insane dealer markup we have up here). still have to deal with reliability issues, but then again, most people buy the car to modify it and there goes your warranty anyways! I might change my mind if I ever get to drive one... but it would take a lot. I'm an STi guy. Still they are impressive cars. Mind you they do beat the wrx but they are a very good match with the STi. The Evolution and the STi have been marketed as competitors and are in the import wars if you will. Pretty cool because we get better and better stuff each year as they try and out do eachother.

if it weren't for my love of the new Spec B i would HIGHLY consider the EVO9 next. honestly, it's going to be right around the same price. i'm just not a fan of the look of the EVO9 vs the Spec B. plus, all my parts (minus ECM) will fit on the new Spec B so I wouldn't have to spend a whole lot to get it back up to stg2.5
