BMW 760 Hydrogen

Post by Atomb »

http://wardsauto.com/ar/bmw_shows_hydrogen/pretty cool....water vapour out the tail pipe....this approach should be interesting as it allows us to slide into hydrogen use....

sounds great, but without a hydrogen fueling infrastructure, where would the owner fill it?

not to mention, wheres the good part? a 6L v12 that has only 280 HP? 0-60 in a blistering 9 seconds! great googally moogally!and so what if it can go 400 miles with both tanks combined, my 16 gallon tank can do that for me now.

ahh young grasshopper...sometimes speed isn't the only necessity.it's a flagship...they purposely did in in the 760 as to begin it's people in that price range that can afford the technology.they mention that the infrastructure aspect is obviously a starting problem...but the neat thing is that this engine will allow one to continue driving with our current gasoline infrastructure and still be viable as the hydrogen stations get phased in.if we wait until the infrastructure is there nothing will ever be done...there needs to be a need to build a station and there needs to be a station to build the engine....by combining (like this) there is a need for hydrogen but not a dependency.in the end this is the tip of the iceburg and as this tech trickles down to smaller engines, we'll start to see some amazing numbers.my favourite part is the water vapour coming out of the tail pipe...cleanest water there is!

that's a great idea, but with no funcionality at this time, are there enough rich hippies that are going to buy this thing?

The thing to think about is that that this car is more like an open beta test. I would think this is mainly to get people interested as well as showing consumers that yes, a hydrogen car is feasable and a viable new alternative fuel source vehicle. I didnt care about the HP and the 0-60 rating what really caught my eye is that even with the hydrogen fuel the car did not loose perfomance, which in my opinion is a great thing. Notice they are only leasing out the vehicles? Im sure its to keep track of them so they can see how the car perfoms out in the real world, not being confined to a test track or driven by professional drivers all day. What better way to test a concept than letting average joe drive it around. I personally cant wait to see more cars like this.
