Any problem reading the Guages?

Post by mwstate »

I find the red backlighting hard to read in sunlight and with sunglasses on even harder. There is so much as far ad lines and numbers etc.. on these guages the the red needles also disappear in the dial. Also if the sun is on the drivers side of the car in often is shadowed on the auto headlight sensor. I have had this happen on bright sunny days and the guages are almost black. If the needle was a different color or the background was not black against the red it would be a great improvment. I wonder if GM will pay my speading ticket because the spedo is on readable??

I can tell you for sure Pontiac wont change the red back lighting. It's a trade mark Pontiac thing. Both my 85 Trans Am and 87 Formula had the red back lights as well as my sisiters Grand Am. I think the red back light is here to stay.

Yep, the red instrumentation is as "Pontiac" as arrowheads and dual honeycomb grilles. Although there was a period in the '70s where they dropped the red instruments and went with white. My '79 Trans Am (factory stock) has white lights in the gauges.IMHO the red lighting isn't what's bad, it's the fact that the gauges need to be backlit even during the day. If there is no light being supplied, you can't read them at all, even in daylight! I like the style, but from a practical standpoint, I may start to get annoyed with it. We'll have to see how it goes...I'm picking up my car on Saturday (w00t!)As far as the auto headlight sensor (is that what they call "Twilight Sentinel"?), I'm sure you could disable it without too much trouble. I don't have any specific info on how one would do that, but if it's anything like disabling the DRLs on the new Firebirds, it could be a piece of cake.

You may have tried this before, but if you set the dashboard lighting sensitivity to the highest level, you will be able to see the dashboard better when the twilight sentinel kicks in during daylight hours.

I couldn't agree with you more.I find it almost impossible to read the radio data during the day, as I always drive with my lights on, and even without my sunglasses on, I find it difficult. It's hopeless while wearing them.I know Pontiac treasures its red lights, but I sure wish they had made an exception this time. The 2003 Corolla LE (I think) has a very easy-to-read instrument panel - black on a white background. It isn't fancy, but I like to see the gauges.
