Whining sound from diff?

Post by 02sixt »

I have an 03 vibe AWD automatic, and recently it started making this gear-sounding whine that gets louder as the speed increases....I took it to a garage, not a dealership, and they didn't know what it was but noted that I had a small leak from the diff housing. Do these AWD Vibes have a problem with the differentials, is there some sort of bearing that wears our in there? Common problem?

I agree, sounds like the carrier bearing. I had rwd Chevy that made the same noise. The older Chevy wasn't too pricey to fix. I hope yours isn't too hard on the wallet.

Here's a thread you may be interested in. Nope, it certainly wasn't an inexpensive repair.

I am wondering if the leak caused too much fluid to come out over time of course and thus that may have done some damage! Yikes, does not look good though!

when I took it to the dealer they said the leak was too minimal to have caused this problem, and that the oil level in the diff was still good.
