Thinking of a weekend car.

Post by SeattleJeremy »

At this point I'm dreaming, this idea is at least two years away, but dream with me for a few min. This past weekend my Fiance and I went down to Lincoln City, OR, for a romantic get away. My Base Vibe 5speed hauled us very well, but it's really not up to the sporty/speed I'm looking for. I'm looking for a weekend getwaway/long haul cruzer. It's got to be 1996 or newer. It has to handle well, and have enough HP to get up and goHatchback or Coupe. RWD, maybe FWD (no AWD). Got to haul 2 people + luggage + Cooler and small amounts of firewood.Mod market is a Plus.Good gas millage is also a plus.Thinking of a 97+Pontiac Firebird 6speed, Nissan 240SX, VW Golf Turbo, Celica GTS, and there where a few others that I can't think of now. This could also be a project car, so under $6,000 US.What do you guys think?

In a year I also wanted a fun car, I was looking for a 2 door coupe and maybe use it for drifting. I was looking atNissan 240sx - has TONS of mods out for itMazda miata - lots of mods, but sorta smallToyota MR2 - some mods but its sorta small too.I say the 240sx just for having the mods available and it should be pretty reliable.

I can shoe horn my 6'6" 180lbs frame in to Miata's and MR2's, but it'll be next to impossible to fit a Lugage and a cooler in them as well. OH BMW Z3 hatchback, would fit the bill, but it'd likly be over my price range.

Go for a Solstice or Sky. fast, sporty, two door convertable. New 2007 models get a turbo. Its a great weekend car I'm sure. I'd like one and would drive a subaru during the week.

A buddy of mine has a Trans Am, I can't recall the exact year, one of the last years they made 'em. Really sweet, the fusion orange sort of color. He's taken it on several trips this year, long trips - IN to NJ and IN to FL twice. Damn thing was getting 28 MPG with the six speed each time. Not too shabby, my 4-banger Vibe often did worse. lol! PLENTY of aftermarket support, I'd say. Since you said 1996 was the limit, I'd vote for a '96 Impala SS. IF, and that's IF, you can find one that's in decent shape, those are hard to come by anymore. People have either run the crap out of them years ago or pimped them all out with huge wheels and various other crap that absolutely ruins them, or made imitation Impalas out of Caprices. So maybe the market for them isn't so good, but maybe it would be for a real (and real good) one. LOL!After seeing the Solstice and sitting in it, I don't think it will be a comfy cruiser for longer distances... I'm 5'8" and I felt like I needed more room. Probably won't have enough cargo room if you're wanting to haul a few things with you either. It's a nice car though!

yep, i'll be looking to do the same in a year or two... but i may be looking at a BMW z3 or z4 roadster. I want a convertible 2 seater. keeping it under $6K would be tough, unless it is a project car for sure. don't even know what is available for that price range. good luck!

96-98 - 240hp Supercharged Riv? Big two door coupe, really comfy and fast. Put some lambos and 20's on it. You can pick one up cheap and they're really reliable. Aftermarket support is kind of nonexistant but it's also nonexistent for 2nd generation Cavaliers and I've seen people get really creative modding those. They don't handle corners that great but there has to be something one can do with the suspension. Sky's the limit.See this photo http://www.cars-online.com/images/riviera.gif

Initially I thought the W-body's would be too big, but they get okay gas milage. I think I might just mod the Vibe, and be done with it. We'll see what happens when the Sway bar is installed. Thanks for the advice everyone.
