Install Hidden 12v Outlet

Post by mylegs »

I just installed a RoadyXT yesterday into my 03 Base. But I'm already sick of looking at the 12v adapter that's plugged into the cigarette lighter. I've read several posts where folks have installed another, hidden 12v outlet behind the dash. Does anyone have a step-by-step for this? Do you have to do an add-a-circuit? Thanks for the help!

As soon as I get my adaptor for my RoadyXT I'm doing the same thing. I am not going to use the actual cigarette plug though. I know I may not see it but just tossing that much wire behind the panels still will bother me.I want to do this and take pictures and either tap the fuse panel or tap the battery (fused) and use a relay

Unfortunately, the Roady's 12v cord is too short to reach the unit. I have it installed in the compartment under the hatch button.

Tap into the 12v + line going to the cig, and wrap it up behind the dash.I tapped into the 12v line under my console that was used for the power adapter (that wasn't installed in my '05). I wired a 12v cig lighter under the console and just left my XM adapter plugged into that.It works great because I had it installed on my console, not the dash. Same idea though and its protected by a 20amp fuse.As long as you're tapping a power supply line for something large - like the radio 12v+ or cig lighter's 12v+ you'll be safely behind a fuse and not risking overloading a circuit.Drop me a line if you want photos. I plan on removing my xm adapter's connections this weekend... I converted over to iPod.

After noticing where the Fuse panel is located I am tempted to install a small aux panel somehwere I can get to I agree that with the amount of amps that those devices take you could easily tap the radio or cig line. I don't think I have a cig unit in my center console??? Just the one near the radio (but I haven't looked yet either)

OK, so I went to RadioShack and got the extra 12 v outlet and took apart the center console. Spliced the red wire on the new outlet to the gray wire on the cig lighter, attached the ground, and tied up the extra wires and body in various spots under the dash. Poof--no wires showing, interchangable, invisilbe power source for iPod and XM. My main concern originally was what cig lighter wire to splice the extra outlet with...got it right with the GRAY.
