Should I go with 17" or 18" wheels

Post by JustinVGT »

Hey everyone, this is my first post. I love this site. I have a Shadow monotone Vibe GT and I'm thinking about possibly purchasing some Mille Miglia Evo5s. They will either be 17x7s with 215-50/17 tires or 18x8s with 225-40/18 tires. I've seen several people have upgraded to 18" wheels. Using this site: http://www.c5-corvette.com/tirecalc.htm, it says that the 18" wheel/tire combo will be .38" shorter than the 17" combo. Some people are saying that with the 18"s it's making the gear ratio taller. Isn't it actually going down just a small amount? The tire I'm thinking about is the Sumitomo HTR+. It's a high performance all season tire and it has some good reviews on tirerack.com. Anyone used those tires? Anyone have any problems with the 8" width of the 18" wheels? I'm also thinking of lowering it sometime, maybe 1.5". Are there any benefits of going with one wheel size or the other? Do the 18" wheels perform better? Is the ride still smooth/comfortable with the 18"s compared to the stock 16"s?Thanks for the help.Justin
