Grid Area Behind Rear-View Mirror

There is an area on the front windshield behind the rear-view mirror that is about 8-10" wide and comes down from the top of the windshield about 4-5". It consists of a grid of small black dots. What is this?

some cars have a darker tint to the window in the area, On the Vibe it does the same thing, but just with a bunch of black dots.

It blocks the sun between the visors and when you look in the mirror,but what about the row of black dots down the edge of the windshield?

my aftermarket window has it as well as the oem one that broke. its awesome! helps a lot with the sun between the visors oh and my aftermarket one came with the blue tint across the top unlike the stock one.
