Inexpensive long term stays in a safe, warm environment.

Post by camthecanuck »

We are toying with the idea of going to Florida (or perhaps Texas, Arizona or other temperate state) for a break from a bitter Canadian winter. Economical, safe housing would be a major consideration before beaches, etc. We are not party people but rather would be seeking relative warmth and peace and quiet in a congenial atmosphere. Would consider apartment sub-let, B and B, motel/hotel especially with kitchen facilities. Any ideas or comments?

Hey Cam!!!I suggest you look into one of the weekly rate hotels that are all over the state of Florida. That usually are $50-$85 per night and include everything like kitchens, laundry service and things like that. What type of atmosphere are you looking for, peaceful?, tourist oriented?.If you want peaceful I suggest teh lower western part of Florida. Naples is great. Sannabelle (sp) Island is gorgeous (that is were I propsed to my fiancee) If you want tourist oriented I suggest Orlando, You are an hour away from both coasts, Tampa, and 2.5 hours awa from Jacksonville. Let me know If I can be of further assistance. FYI it was 25 degrees last night at my house. Your weather decided to pay us a visit so when you visit can you please take it back with you!!! LOL Have a good one!

Thanks for your ideas. Any specific Motel or Hotel chains/names? Would be after the non-touristy setting. I'll drive to the tourist scene when desired.

I'll try this clever strategy in the interim!

Here in Jacksonvillle, we have Intown suites,Extended stay America, and Suburban Lodge. These all have weekly rates and kitchens. i think that these are all national chains. If you need the #'s for them I can give you those. It was 19 degrees last night. It was a record for that day. This week it will be 30-40's night time and 50-60's day time. That's probably pretty warm for you guys HUH We are about as north as you can go in Florida though. 2 hrs from Orlando 5 hrs from the Miami area, and 3hrs from Tampa or so.Hope this helps. Let me know if I can be of asistance.

You can also search a vacation webiste like travelocity.com for free to get ideas of different chains and their prices. I love the fact that its cold out thought I wish it would stay for a week or two at a time.

Cam!I just successfully returned from Florida and Louisianna. We had a blast stayed in great hotels for under $59 U.S., even in New Orleans. While you are travelling stop at Tourist info places and ask for Hotel coupon books. The ones we had all had green covers and were very helpful. Most nights we stayed for $38 U.S. at Super 8 or Econolodge. They were clean and easy to find, perfect for travellers. They might be noisy due to their proximity to the interstate, so pack earplugs. Enjoy!

Thanks for your information. The South looks more attractive than ever as we have been racking up steady -24 C temps and tons of snow but it will have to wait for a while.

Every state has Rest Areas/Welcome Centers as soon as you go across the border. You can ususally find coupons for hotel nights at the rest areas as well as miliions of brochures on what there is to do in that state....Stop by Tennessee...your Vibe will love it...and it is beautiful here!!!!
