I was wondering if anyone looked at a Subaru WRX when the purchased their Vibe. I may have bought one if the price was a little closer to the Viber. I am happy now because I think I would have regretted owning the WRX because the insurance is more expensive, it is less fuel efficient, and I could not put as much stuff in it when I went up north. It would have been more fun on a daily basis though. My Camaro will CRUSH a WRX, but I can't drive it in the winter. That's probably why I'm thinking about this right now .Did you look at a WRX?Jason
Yep, it was my dream.... But too expensive, $36 000 vs. $20 000, plus insurance much higher.Plus the Vibe is nore versatile. I don't no regret my choice by going with the Vibe

The last time I was at the track I lost to a normal looking 96 civic sedan. It had a prelude engine with a turbo and nitrous as I later found out. I blew it away of the line and it flew by me at 1/4 track. It ran an 11.3, lolI MEANT NO DIS-RESPECTSubaru's reliability has been questionable in the past. If I remember correctly it has been improving. However, I would have leased the Subaru so I could have pounded on it and turned it back in.Jason
quote:I blew it away of the line and it flew by me at 1/4 track.OUCH! I hate that. That's funny because my Nova would probably launch on you but then you would catch me by the end of the track. My Nova runs 13.5 @ 102 with 1.8 60' times. With a 105-mph speed you are getting I'm assuming with some traction, you should be in the low 13's if not a high 12. What are your 60' times? My Nova: http://www.novaresource.org
I tried to get the link up but couldn't. If you want to see the movie e-mail me at slbpsi63@juno.com and I will forward it to you. Sorry about the mix up. I didn't take it personal I think they both are great cars to mod for the 1/4 mile.
I did look at a Subaru WRX. They are more expensive, but I was talking with some people on http://www.i-club.com (Subaru Forums) and they say Subaru is very dependable these days. They're speedy, handle extremely well (AWD), and are just all-around cool in my book. With speed being my thing, the WRX is huge drool material, but since my wallet says Vibe, there won't be a Subie in my garage any time soon. I rally cars.
I think NSIMKINS has one? I know one of the genvibe Gods hace one. Maybe he will chime in soon. I've driven one and it was quite fast and the handling was exceptional. Personally I'd like to a Nissan Skyline even if I had to import it and have a right side driver car. That thing is FAST!!!!

NovaResource, with 2.73's I was cutting sub 2 seconds sixty's but the gearing was horrible and I would shift into 3rd way too late. With the 3.73's its about 2.05-2.1 but I dropped 4 tenths overall . I only ran one day with them so far and it was with 4.5 year old street tires. I don't drive it much I'm going to get some drag radials this spring and I think if I can pull a ~ 1.9 60' I can run deeper in the 13's. Then I'm going to install a 3000 stall converter, if that doesn’t put me in the 12's, I'll do some suspension work.I have always liked 69 nova's for some reason. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren’t they very light. I have to be close to 3,700 pounds though I have not weighed the car and I don't take ANYTHING out of it at the track.
I've gotten 1.8 60' times with very small 235/60-15 BFG Drag Radials. They are excellent! However, don't listen to BFG about the burnout procedure. They say to do a small burnout. That's a bunch of bunk. I do a 5 sec burnout on the line-lock and then release the line-lock and burn until it hooks. I've also gotten 1.8 60' times with 26x10.5x15 MT Sportsman Pro tires (8" tread, wrinklewall tires, basically a slick with tread cut in them). I have 3.90 gears and a 3000-rpm converter. If you're looking for a good race converter, try these guys: http://www.raceconverters.com I highly recommend them.My Nova is 3310-lbs without driver. That is with a fiberglass hood and bumpers, aluminum wheels and rear drums but a full interior (carpet, rear seat, etc) and full trunk (mat, spare tire, jack, etc). Most '69 Novas with a V8 and auto trans are in the 3400-3500 pound area in stock form but can get as light as 3100 pounds easily. There are weight figures on my webpage: http://www.novaresource.orghttp://www.n ... eights.htm
I was thinking about getting a Midwest converter because there cheaper than the popular brands for 4th gen F-body's.(Vigilante and Yank). I'm just concerned about their efficiency, as my car is not a pure drag car and I need all the HP I can get. I'm going to order the BFG drag radials for the camaro in 255/50/16. It should give me a decent sidewall.Although after next winter I should roll about 400 RWHP But I want to get in the 12's with bolt on's. Actually I don't but I had to buy this Vibe so that's my story.Nice Website by the way!Jason
The BFG Drag Radials are great but they don't last real long if you drive them on the street much. They are much more stable at speed than the wrinklewalls of the MT Sportsman Pros. I use about 16 to 18 psi in the DR's at the track and 30 on the street.I think the Midwest converters feel much tighter during "normal" driving but under full throttle they flash right up to their rated stall.
This thread got hijacked. Anyway, I considered the WRX, but it was too much money, I was looking for a daily driver. I already have a speed machine with the Vette. To DaBear and Nova, I've been wanting to get some DR's or ET streets to get some 11 second slips, but I'm afraid I'll wear the stock clutch out too quickly doing 4000-5000 clutch dumps. I'm happy with my 12.29 on street tires. see sig..

What do you launch at now with street tires? Even a 500-1000 rpm increase with DR's with net you better times. The time you gain in the first 60 feet makes all the difference at the top end. You've got the trap speed for a high 11 sec run.
Here's a little tip for everyone here: when you reply to someones post by clicking on "REPLY" the name of the person you are replying to is put in the title. If you look at the title of my post "Re: Subaru WRX (QUIKAG)" you will see I was replying to QUIKAG.Look at the title of this post and you will see your name since I was replying to you.I hope that clears up the confusion.
Thanks for the reminder Nova. Adding the Quote Original Post also helps. And now back to our regularly scheduled thread. I saw a WRX yesterday. My coworker who calls my Vibe ugly (and owns a purple neon) says his next car will be the WRX. Quite a step up from the purple neon!

I'm sure I could net significantly quicker times with some sticky drag tires. My 60' on that 12.29 run was a 1.93, so there is a lot of room for improvement. I would say mid to high 11's is very doable with strong traction off the line. Maybe some day. :DAnyway, back to the WRX, it has AWD, so traction isn't an issue for that car.

Question about the AWD:On the WRX, it just shifts drive power from front wheels to back wheels (and vice versa), right? It never really drives with all 4? Or even just the left 2 or right 2?Heck, do any cars these days drive like that? Even just front-left and rear-right, etc? Seems like that'd be an advanced engineering feat to me.Interesting...

Launching at 2500 to 3000 will probably give you an easy 1.8 or better 60' time. Make that a 3500-rpm launch and I'm sure a low 1.7 60' time and a 11.99 is almost a given. DO IT!
Maybe when I have enough cash laying around to replace the clutch. I'm more of a roadracer with the car, the drag racing is something I do a few times a year just for bragging rights. I road race the car as often as I can, I have some R compound tires for that, maybe I could try them out at the strip, just lower the pressure to 10psi or something in the tires.

Back to the wrx...1) Subes are VERY reliable and always have been (excluding anything to do with rust... they were happy to rust, and rust, and rust!!!). I have many stories about many subes...I'd bet they are better than hondas in the reliability dept and absolutely crush anything made by the big 3. Of course, until a few years ago they were also incredibly ugly and almost impossibly slow. Nothing like going serious 4x4ing in a li'll sube wagon and having monster truck guys do the doubble take... how'd you get THAT thing out here? 2) the 4 wheel drive system in all subes is Full Time. 50/50 torque split unlike the Vibe or most other 4 wheel assist torque proportioning setups. That's why they are not as fuel efficient but handle better than anything short of an Audi Quattro. GM actually licenses it in their Aztec line of awd 'vans'.3) and finally, I'd compare a TS to a vibe if that's what you're looking for. Same basic layout but bigger engine (hp/torque 165/164). The WRX is probably the best afordable all round sports car... but you're paying for it. 'Course you can easily 'chip' it to 280hp etc etc!Just my two bits

Geee, I have been gone from Genvibe for too long. As some of you know I flipped the Vibe GT for a WRX back in September…the simile is still on my face. Now with winter is here….I will never go back to FWD or RWD. In February I will be getting an ECU refresh from ECUTek, up-pipe, down-pipe, and an MRT exhaust. This kit was on a four-wheel dyno and made 250 whp….@ 240 ft. pounds. Wheel hp not crank hp. Crank hp would be over 300 hp. All this for $2400 CDN. 13 quarters well into the low one hundreds should be no problem. 0 to 60 should be in the low 4’s. Can’t wait for summer.Pic of REX.....waiting for the new plumbing.
Thanks rasermon…Dabear, The MSRP here in Canada was $34,995. It was an ’02 sitting on the lot in September…I talked them down to $32,650 as they were unloading the ‘03’s….got lucky.
I think the WRX are a bit to high in price, also. Thats one reason I didnt really look into them. Another reason is people have told me they arent all they are cracked up to be. For that price, I could get a 97 Supra Turbo with low mileage. Now thats a sports car.

I imagine it would take a very strong driveline to handle 5K RPM clutch dumps...Jason
Remember OMW purchased his WRX in Canadian dollars... at $0.65 roughly that's around $21,300 USD... I know there are a few flaws in a simple currency exchange but... you get the idea. Compare that to a new Vibe GT in USD and it's not that bad.Puleeze, don't dump your clutch at 5000rpm. That does nothing except break drivetrains, bog engines and give bad 0-60 times. Controlled slippage is the way to go, saving your drivetrain and using a clutch for what it was designed for!!!

From what limited understanding I have there are two ways to achieve a good launch in the WRX. Slip the sluth, or drop the clutch in boost making sure that the tires break free. If the tires spin a bit you will avoid the massive shock to the driveline. Makes sense to me, but if it was my car, i dunno. Jason
Yes….slipping is the best. You would have to be a moron to dump @ 5000. There is no advantage to dumping. I pump the throttle slightly between 3500 and 4000. When I decide to go for it I simultaneously floor the accelerator and let the clutch out slowly. When the car jumps out I let the clutch all the way….to the pin…no tire spin…all wheels gripping….se ya.
