Subwoofer Connection Question

Post by vibe-04 »

I've got a new HU from Sony that has an RCA audio out that can be switched from SUB (with two low pass filter settings) or REAR. The picture from my manual is decieving. It "appears" I don't need an amp for a subwoofer connection. I was going to buy a 10" sub in a carpeted enclosure and connect it to a 300W amp. But the diagram has got me confused. So my question is: can the head unit drive the sub or do you need an amp?

get an amp, you don't want to blow the sub due to distortion from inadequate power.

That diagram is trying to show how you can have it EITHER set to rear OR sub. You still need an amplifier for the sub, no matter what the diagram 'looks like'.
