ps3 details are out

Post by jwalcik »

sony spilled the beans at their pre-e3 talk today. two versions, $499 and $599, the difference being that the cheaper version has a 20GB drive vs the pricier version's 60GB drive. no other details about what to expect in the box, other than (presummably) their new wireless controller.what do you folks who were holding out for the ps3 think? engadget coverageshacknews coveragei'm very curious about the new controller. sounds similar to the wii, but with the full dual shock layout. my question is, how much yaw/pitch tracking can you do while expecting someone to be able to reach all of those buttons? could be very cool. --update--apparently the cheaper version doesn't come with an HDMI output or wireless networking spec's from sony japan (pdf)

ya, had a customer show me all the new info online. looks interesting and actually kinda cool (i don't even like vid games, but as for coolness factor and gadgets... well.... ok)and the pricing is atleast less than what the initial speculation was so i guess i can live with it.

If I bought one I'd get the higher end model for the larger hard drive, WIFI, HDMI, and memory card slots. I just don't know about spending $600. I still have a lot of PS2 games to catch up on and I'm still impressed with its capability. I used to be all hyped up for the PS3 before hearing this news today, but now I may wait instead of buying near launch. If it were $400, I'd say I'd probably definitely buy it, but $600, plus games and accessories could push it very easily into the $700-800 range. I don't know if it's worth it. I guess we'll see what other info is released this week at E3.

well the thing with the high end one is that its marketed to more than just a console, its a blu ray movie player, media center thing. has all the memory card inputs and wireless for controllers and psp. but yes the high end one is deff the one to get.

Just the perspective of an old fart here...there are so many things you could be doing with your time that is much more interesting and productive. I will predict that later in life you will wish that you had all those spent hours of your life back. Not preaching here, just relating my own experiance.

I haven't been one to spend hours on end playing video games. They are fun, but such a waste of time. I have many other interests and hobbies, such as sailing which takes up my entire weekends. I saw the Volvo Ocean Race on Sunday and it was an awesome experience (posted pics in off topic). One of my friends I invited out the weekend before had already planned some kind of thing in an online video game where they all meet together in their virtual world and fight evil creatures. Now, for me I would much rather spend a beautiful day outside, on the bay then playing a video game inside all day LOL!

I didn't see it specifically called out, but is the PS3 supposed to be able to play all the PS2 games? That was a big advantage for the PS2, it could play all the PS1 games. and then the question would be, who's gonna be the first to install one in their Vibe?

sony has confirmed all ps1 and ps2 games will work with it. Yea i agree on the wasting time, but i dont game to often... and my generation is all about technology and video games so its been with me since i was born, starting with the dos games and atari 2600 (for me). SOME people take it so far and get their lifes sucked out of them and play like everquest aka evercrack 24/7. In college its pretty popular to have halo tournies at ppls houses with like 16 players. but ps3 is more than just games, its a media center. it will be the cheapest blu ray player on the market, it will stream music and movies. you can puchase movies and music on it from online, i mean its a all in one pc/console/media center here, pretty amazing.

Not preaching here, just relating my own experiance.Well maybe when I'm really old I may look back on all this and agree with you. But for now... I still find them enjoyable, entertaining and as long as I get done what needs to be done, remember to talk to the wife.... etc... I personally do not find it a waste of time. Regardless of what others may think. And some games are educational IMO. For example I believe the many hours I spent playing Gran Turismo 1 through 4 helped with my autocross driving. I just need a faster car now But to me games are just like movies... entertainment.

Some people may not like video games or think they are a waste, but they may spend more time watching TV which I think is just as much as a waste. I decided to cut off my cable since they raised my rates and I really didn't watch it that much, so now I may try to finish up some more PS2 games. About GT4, I agree as well that you can learn some driving techniques through the game. The PS3 does look awesome and all the multimedia capabilities are very cool, plus the PSP connectivity will put mine to more use. I'll probably be buying one some day since Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy are on it. Guess we'll see what other info is released this week.
