Anyone tackled fixing the sunroof shade rattle ?

Post by guitarspaz »

Can it be fixed or improved without taking down the whole headliner ? I'm afraid that would generate more rattles than it fixed.....

A small piece of foam with one sticky side is what was used on my old 03' before i bought it, worked great.Slid window all the way back, then closed it to the "soft-spot'' safty feature, closed my shade as far as it would go (half-way) and slightly pushed up on the front and appyed it there and whent in between the shade and sun roof and applyed it on the left side so it was in between the shade and the slide it was on. the shade was easy to open and close but it had more resitance than it was without it. Took me 10 min to do.

I know it REALLY isn't the answer you're looking for but removing the thing entirely works wonders. Of course you kinda sorta no longer have any protection from the sun, but hey, it doesn't rattle!I just finished removing mine completely. It was in a serious state of disrepair, so it wasn't usable any longer. Totally my fault but I am not going to go into it. Took about 3 hours total. If anyone is interested in removal tips: Once you get all the trim taken down, drop the headliner - it doesn't have to come out for this, just rest it on the seats. At the very rear of the moonroof track, you'll see rubber stoppers on both sides, these are held in by a philips head screw at the top. I used one of those 'S' shaped philips / flat head screwdrivers. You don't have much room at all to work with between the top of the track and the roof. After about 30 minutes, I finally got the screws out. After that, it just slides right back and out. I tightened the screws back down by hand, I figured 'screw that!' It was a long tedious process getting only a fraction of a turn each time then having to try to fight with repositioning the screwdriver... Wasn't what I call fun.Surprisingly, I didn't introduce any new rattles, didn't break anything in the process, and everything went back together without any trouble. I fixed my sunshade rattle and some rattles from around the dome light as well, so now no rattles at all from above. It is pretty nice....

I was able to add some padding and put the sunshade back in without fully removing the headliner using this technique.

Thanks for the tip on the technique, I wouldn't have been able to get it accomplished without running that by you several months ago. I would have been tearing out the whole moonroof to get th shade out. lol!I had a "jingle" coming from my dome light that was driving me crazy, I put duct tape on all of the metal clips and where the tabs sit on top of the plastic, completely cured it... Crazy how much of a racket that thing was making!

Hmmm...Mine is really more of a squeaking sound that I thougt was a rattle. When you are driving and hit a bump, it sounds like loose trim in the rear of the car. After poking and pressing a bit, I figured out it was the moonroof shade. With it open or closed, I can press it upward with my hand, and I get a squeaking sound. If I tap it, it's exactly the sound I'm hearing that I thought was coming from the rear. I slid the shade back, opened the moonroof, and looked in there with a flashlight while I was generating my squeak/rattle. It would seem to be either the shade creaking/rattling in its tracks, or the tracks creaking/ratting in their mounts. Is this similar to anything that you guys have been hearing/dealing with ? Would hate to tear it down only to fins I couldn't do anything about it.Thanks.
