If a game is rated for 18 year olds and older who "know better" is played by an eight year old who "doesn't know better" then its still not the game's fault the kid was influenced.I know I never got the "don't steal a car" talk when I was eight lol

A minor's actions are the responsibility of their parents, and an adult's actions are the responsibility of no-one or nothing but themselves. However, I do believe that this does show that people, especially minors and the younger the more so, can be influenced by video games (along with other media.) I'm not saying that game developers need take responsibility for those influenced by their games, though I do feel they should take responsibility for marketing it properly. (ex not marketing GTA or Playboy Mansion to adolescents). The only other point I would make is that a rating system can a useful tool for parents, but I think it's silly for anyone to assume that everyone over 18 can handle the influences of a particular game, yet no-one under 18 can.

But they have no control over a mother buying it and then giving it to her 8 year old son. Yet somehow the blame always ends up back at the one who made the game.

all i know is i watched horror movies my whole life. i would have been allowed to play these games as a kid too. i haven't killed anyone with a chainsaw yet. if you are too lazy as a parent to teach your kids right from wrong, making the video game a scapegoat is total crap!

Both should be prevented from marketing(developer)/selling(retailer) products to inappropriate age groups, but it's ultimately up to the parent. In other words, the retailer may be bad for selling GTA to a 10yo, but the parent is never off the hook for allowing the kid to play it.Quote, originally posted by drunkenvibe »all i know is i watched horror movies my whole life. i would have been allowed to play these games as a kid too. i haven't killed anyone with a chainsaw yet. if you are too lazy as a parent to teach your kids right from wrong, making the video game a scapegoat is total crap!Agreed. Just another part of the "not my fault" culture.(Which is not to contradict my point that if you are too lazy to teach your kids right from wrong and/or you allow them exposure to inappropriate material, they will be influenced by media including games. Not necessarily in overt ways that directly mimic the game..... fortunately schools and society to a degree also provide a reference for right and wrong, which is why the ****** parent problem is not more of a pandemic. But again to clarify - that does not give parents the right to blame the game. Parents are the responsible party. And it is because these media forms may have influences that they need to take that responsibility.)

Well that doesn't sound to bad compared to them being taught in a class with no punishment at all. I'm sorry but we're seeing the outcome of a punishmentless society. I grew up with spankings and I do know what the difference between a spanking and abuse is. Parents are to scared to teach their kids. Leave it to someone else and blame someone else. That way no one from child services can come knocking.Oh well... hope I'm gone before this world falls into the hands of these kids. Including future drunkinkids

As a public school teacher, I agree with the comment about today's parents. We are expected to be all things to all students, yet the parents complain about the quality of education, blah blah blah...I either keep my car keys in my pocket, or in a locked cabinet that my students can't get in to.And hey DrunkenVibe! I'd love to have your kids in my class!
