Is there a way to turn off the twilight sensor?

Post by QUIKAG »

I want to have the option to turn my own lights on or off. I park in a garage at work and the lights come on after 20 seconds or so, once I get out of the garage, they turn back off. Don't any of you worry about bulbs burning out faster because they're always turning on and off unnecessarily? This includes interior dash lights and exterior foglamps, etc...

I don't worry about the headlights turning on and off because the sensor works so poorly for me that my headlights go on every time I drive! It sucks. Cadillacs in the mid to late 1980's had twilight sentinels that worked properly, almost 20 years later and now they can't make them work right? The ones on my mom's '99 Alero work fine, too. My light sensor didn't cause the headlights to come on during daylight, even with shadows over it when I first got the car. But this week is the first time temperatures have dropped below freezing, and now my headlights come on and stay on no matter what angle the sun is shining on the sensor. This new perfomance (or lack of it) may be temperature related.I suspect it is a defective design or part, especially with so many people complaining and wanting to disable the "feature". Anyone heard of an service bulletin or advisory about this sensor? I'm going to take it in and complain about it to the dealer, and hope he can prove that it isn't working to spec, or if it is I'll prove to him that it's a lousy spec and should be changed.KSNeptune.

When did you buy your Vibe? End of Summer? You see, the sun is higher in the sky during the summer and lower in the winter. You problem is not temperature related but sun related. The lower sun is creating more shadows over your headlight sensor.

I have also noticed that if the sensor is in the sun when the vehicle is started-up, the sensitivity to shadows becomes more noticable. When the sensor is in the shade (not in direct sunlight) when the vehicle is started-up, the sensitivity does not seem to be near as sensitive to shadows and direct sunlight.Maybe the sensor gathers light data when first initialized and then bases the on/off functionality depending on it's initial reading. I would like to see other opinions on this.

I think the sensor sucks!!! I have a 2000 Montana minivan with automatic lights and it works perfect. Couldn't ask for better performance. It only activates when it is truly dusk, never when the sun is low and you must wear sunglasses, like with my vibe. The sensor is very small and right in the middle of the dash top where it should be. The sensor in my vibe is a disgrace. It always comes in when the sun is low, like in morning and evening when I am driving to work, and this kicks on the lights, yet I am wearing sunglasses. Dash is hard to see and radio - well I just gave up on that. This is my biggest grip with the car.Keith

From a picture of the unit in a previous thread, it looks simply like a "dumb" sensor that trips based on a set footcandle or lumen level. Obviously it is too sensitive (or quick to respond) to changes (ie: shadows).

The "smart" sensor technology is very expensive and I don't think GM will put them in a car to control an item like that.

The "smart" sensor technology is very expensive and I don't think GM will put them in a car to control an item like that.[/QUOTE]Yes--I agree with you also--but what I can't figure out is how GM didnot catch something like that in their vechile research and testing before they released the Vibe for public sale. Very often when my headlights kick on it dims the dash to the point where the guages are hard to read. I can just see me trying to tell a cop I didn't know my speed because I couldn't read the guages. When the weather warms I will clip and ground the yellow wire and disable the whole poorly designed setup. James
