*good* service experience after a bad service experience.

Post by jwalcik »

for the last four or five years, i've always had my cars serviced (oil changes, tire rotations, etc) at a local shop here in austin (espresso lube, yes, you read that right). they always did a great job, i never had to worry about their work, and they didn't try to push a bunch of "extra" services on me. unfortunately, they closed late last year and the owner has yet to open his new shop.against my better judgement, and needing an oil change before a weekend road trip, i went to a jiffy lube near where i work. while doing my oil change, they start the song and dance about needing my air filter replaced. it was definitely time (right at 1yr and 15,000 miles), but i told them i'd take care of it myself, as i didn't feel like spending $30 on their filter. they finish, i hop in my car, and i'm headed off to pep boys to pick up a new filter, but my car is shifting really rough, and idling a few hundred RPMs low. i stop, pop the hood, and to my surprise they not only didn't put my old (dirty) air filter back in the air box (it was on top of the engine cover), but they didn't even bother to close the air box. i was furious, put everything back together, grab a new filter, and head out of town for the weekend. yesterday, when i got back to town, i stopped by and asked to speak with the manager. i told him what had happened, and handed him a pair of pliers that the mechanic had left on top of my battery. he immediately apologized, and insisted on looking at my car himself. he checked my fluids and tire pressure, apologized a few more times, and immediately gave me a full refund for the service. having been completely set to argue about the whole situation, i was blown away.

props to jiffy lube for stepping up.they broke my dad's hood deflector on his pickup when he took it there for service and he was watching them. "Well... uh it was cracked beforehand..."fortunatly for them my dad is the non confrontational type who didn't press the issue... they didn't replace the deflector.
