Fuel filter change @ 30,000 miles?

Post by orbix »

Ok, so I'm basically at the 30k mark on my 2005 Base Vibe, and the dealer was recommending some ridiculously camplicated (and $200) service package, and I'm not convinced that any of it is needed, as virtually none of it is in the manual's regular maintenance plan. However, the one thing that I'm thinking may be a real need is a change of the fuel filter. My fuel economy has gone down a bit as of late (~28mpg, down from 32), and I'm not sure why. I just got the oil changed, and I'm still driving about the same amount and speed, so I'm at a bit of a loss...Here are my questions, then:1) Could a fuel filter be the cause of my lower economy?2) How often should you change the fuel filter? (I pretty much exclusively fill at BP, Shell, and Marathon stations, so I think I'm putting pretty decent fuel through it, too.)

The fuel filter should be fine for many, many more miles. I don't think the filter could be dirty enough already to affect the mileage. A dirty filter would more likely show up as a loss of performance not mileage.

Your air cleaner could be the cause of your mileage decrease or in my case the gasoline blend changes this time of year, decreasing my mpg. They add mtbe to it, what really sucks is we pay more and the pollution reduction is still up for debate.

http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=5021We don't have a normal fuel filter. It's basically the top of the fuel pump module. I changed mine at 50K miles, and will change it again probably at 70K miles because I'm just that (removed) about car maintenance, PLUS I work at a dealership. The filter isn't cheap, nor easy to change.
