CL -- does it go off after hook up to diagnostic device?

Post by kcagain »

I took my vibe to a mechanic when I noticed my CL on. Car was driving fine. Mechanic tells me I need a new evap canister and with labor it will cost$500. I picked it up the same afternoon, without giving my go-ahead for the work, and now the CL is off. Is it off because the mechanic turned it off, or off because maybe my gas cap is screwed on better? Should I go to a dealership. From reading these threads sounds like there are a lot of non-issues associated witht he CL coming on. My car has 40k miles on it. Confused!

CEL light was on right? the check engine light? This can be from the gas cap not screwed on tight, but if thats not the case its usually a emissions part issue. They might of pulled the battery to reset the computer. This would take away the CEL, but if it senses a problem it will go on again. What year is your car? Maybe a sensor is dirty.

Yes, light WAS on, and then when I got it back from mechanic it was off. It's a 2003 Vibe, I bought used. So since it is driving fine and I have no other probs, you feel it is ok to just wait and see if the light comes back? The mechanic dude thought is was ok too. I hate to throw the money at it if it isn't for sure necessary.

well the scan tool which was probably a techII has the ability to clear the code but does not do so when scanning it. The tech probably reset the light which is why its off. the issue may still come back.

I say just drive it till it comes back on (if it does come back on) then take it to autozone for a FREE code diagnostic thingy. get the code and post it here on the site and everyone at genvibe will try to help you out

Autozone is good for a free code pull, however if you drop $100-130 you can get a OBDII scanner and use it when you want (scantool.net get the ISO standard)Pulling the code is only 1/2 of the answer, if you can watch the sensor statistics you can figure out on your own (sometimes with the help of google) what is really wrong. Plus you can run your own Dyno's without dropping $100 per pull.
