Engine Ticking Sound

Post by tots »

Hi Folks -I have a 2004 base with manual transmission with 31K miles. I have noticed in the past couple months that a ticking or clicking sound has developed and is becoming louder. It's coming from the engine area - specifically from a rectangular black box that seems to have something to do with the throttle cable. The ticking happens whenever the engine is running, whether I am moving or not. Everything seems to be running OK, but the noise is getting worse.Anyone had the same issue? Thanks!

my base has always 'ticked' from the lower passenger side. I read some where (Matrix forum?) that it was normal.I read somewhere else where someone had the same problem with the VSV, they pulled it, cleaned it out and the problem went away.*EDIT*So that somewhere was this forum http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=6767Do you have a CAI?

another thing it might be is the valves. have you tried running fuel injector cleaner yet? open the hood and try to find exactly where its coming from ie. pulley/engine block/by valve cover it could be a thing you need to take in.

Sure go with the obvious :~} just kidding, the simplest answer is usually the right answer, i bet your right about the valves.I thought the valves were self adjusting now. I would expect at least that from toyota.

If it is the black box, mine does the same it's an emission thing I believe. OR it's these 1.8 and the older 1.6 liter engines used in Toyotas have solid lifters. This is a warranty issue BECAUSE they should not go out of spec for the first 48k as stated in the manual. Others have gone to Pontiac dealers and been given the B.S., "nothing wrong". Find a dealer that sells both Pontiac and Toyota...you may have better luck. PLUS Toyota dealers have done these a few times. The 1.8 liter has been around for 7+ years.
