Brake Squeal in Reverse only

Post by markbenbear »

05' Frosty White 23k miles, new tires (Pirellie P6) pretty much OE everything. Have had ^^luck with forums getting probelms solved from Conti tires to the hot soak start problems with the PCM. Not till I went to dealer with TSB and documents did I get anywhere. Thanks everybody! Said before that I love the car but have a brake problem. Initially lots of brake noise grinding, dealer replaced front pads with ceramic and cleared up grinding and noise except for a high pitched sqeal when you brake while backing up more from cold than hot start and usually just with the lightest tap of pedal. As usual dealer cannot replicate and looks at me like I'm on something. Anybody got a suggestion on what and where to look?

completely normal. Most likely on a cold morning you have a bit of condensation on the rear brakes that burns off on the first application of them and not heard after that.At least thats what I have encountered with brake squeal when backing up over the past 4 years in the automotive industry.

hi markbenbear,I would agree that for the most part it's normal but here's what I've found out from my experience. I've noticed a slight high pitched squeal usually after having the tires rotated. Found out that the tire place doesn't always torque the lugs right. Sometimes uneven around the different lugs, and once was well over the rated 76 ft-lbf. I specifically tell them about the torque specs too.I always re-torque the lugs after having tire work done now. When I forget, I usually notice a slight squeak, especially in reverse. It's not a continuous sqeak though, its definitely from one part of the rotor. It might just be my obsessiveness on this subject since I completely twisted off a stud because it was torqued WAY too high at a Tires Plus (will never go back there anyway). but it does seem to remedy my issue. Might work for you, might not. Dave

Thanks for input, brakes make that noise only in R and under just about in conditions wet or dry hot or cold just more and louder when cold. I really do appreciate all the good advice.

Thanks for the input. Something new to look at. Dealer service said something about glazing but not specific. Going to have to pop the wheels and look and do for myself I guess. Appreciate the good advice and direction.

With drum brakes there is a self adjusting tension on the top part of the drum pad piston that will adjust itself in reverse to make up for pad wear inside the drum so there is never no more than. .0055 clearance between the brake shoe and the drum. This is only made up for when the car is in reverse and it shouldn't make any noise. but if it is, take your wheel off and look at the tensors for wear damage or rust, also look at your springs. if any of the above is there other than rust replace, if just rust clean with brake cleaner, easy job. but if you see none of that look at your shoes, Gm came out with the squall inducator in the 60's,. I hope this helped.
