P0117/changing stat

Post by squints »

I have a 2003 Vibe GT that recently had the cel come on. I tried the gas cap fix, and drove it for another 50 miles or so over the next 2 days. Nothing changed. I then had AutoZone run a diagnostic and we came to the conclusion that the stat was faulty/stuck open, making the engine run cooler than it should. Better than running too hot was my first thought. I checked here for any tips on the stat and dove in. I need a little help now though. I had trouble breaking the lower end bolt on the alternator loose and wondered if it was a lefty thread by chance, before I give it hell and strip the head off. Second, how does the tensioner operate? Is the tension set only by the alternator being pushed forward or back? Can someone give me a somewhat detailed set of instructions for replacing the stat? Thanks for all the help, this forum is unlike any other (for previous cars I've had).

The alternator does not provide tension, there is a separate tensioner. see http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id ... d?id=16307 is a thread about johnsoax's adventures in thrermostat replacement. There is a link to a soft copy of the matrix service manual in http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=1156, worth the download if you are going to do anything to the car.for what it's worth, it says that for a P0117, the causes are Open or short in engine coolant temperature sensor circuit Engine coolant temperature sensor ECMQuote, originally posted by squints » this forum is unlike any other (for previous cars I've had).is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I suppose it could be taken either way. It was a positive comment, this forum seems to be much more responsive and knowledgeable. Thanks for the heads up.
