Tire Pressure Light - 2005 Vibe

Post by arniep »

I have a 2005 Vibe and have had it in three times because of a faulty air pressure light warning. I was told once that my air pressure varied by more than 4 psi, so that was the problem. I am now told that it is a faulty ABS regulator??? Anyone else had this problem?

No, but the ABS problem sounds like it could be right. The tire pressure monitor is part of the ABS system.I'm sure you've already been through this, but just make sure you reset it properly whenever it goes off or you rotate / change / fill your tires.

Thanks for letting me know the tire pressure system is part of the ABS system. It didn't make sense to me, but now maybe the two systems should be complimentary to each other...tires...traction...brakes...etc.Wayne

I just sent you a reply to your previous response to my inquiry. I just looked at your reply again, and it made me think. I hate when that happens. I just had the tires rotated at WalMart prior to my problem. Are you implying this could be the source of my warning light problem? A simple process should not create a problem. Wayne

The system works on tire rotation time. A smaller tire ( Less Air) will rotate faster. when this happens the light trips. I would say a tire rotation could do it if they only moved one side. Assuming you had them rotated front to back.

As Digger noted, the tire pressure monitor works using the ABS system tire rotation speed sensors. As a tire loses air, it starts rotating at a slightly different speed relative to the other tires. The system detects this and reports it with the pressure warning light. This why the system has to be reset per the manual when you rotate tires, adjust the pressure, or get new tires. The system needs to calibrate what the "normal" relative speeds of all the tires are, and moving them around, replacing them, or changing the pressures can change this "normal", and give a false warning. However, when it is reset on these occasions, I find it pretty accurate: I've never gotten a false warning and it alerted me both times I had a low tire (slow leak due to a nail). So, I'm saying that not resetting it on these occasions might cause a false warning. On the other hand, if they found a problem with your ABS, that could very well be it.(yeah, it would be nice if such changes didn't require recalibrating the system, but you don't get "true" direct tire pressure monitoring in this price range )
