New member has questions about Vibe...

Post by ashleymc_38 »

As some people know, I just purchased a Vibe like a week or two ago. But it seems like I'm already having problems with it. It seems like when it has been sitting for a coupla hours and when I go to put it in drive/reverse the car makes this really loud noise..I can't necessarily describe it but then when I tap on the brake it sounds like something is rubbing really bad underneath..like this big grinding noise. They put new front brakes on the car before I purchased it so I didn't think they were the brakes but now I think differently. I don't know much about cars, as you people can prolly tell, so don't laugh. That is why I am here asking. I think it also might have something to do with the cold? It runs perfectly after i drive it for awhile but just when i start it up in the morning or after work, i'm afraid to even put it in reverse out of the parking space because of the really loud grinding noise. Thanks for the help!Ash

ok, how many miles on on the car? does it happen ONLY if it sits a while, and you set the parking brake?

Ashley, like my 04 I got last week, you should have 30 days to bring the car back to the dealership and have them check it out for free. Tell them to leave it out and try the same thing you did the next morning. If you bought it privately, then you are going to have to pay to have it fixed. Good luck and I hope it is nothing big.

Its got around 46k on it and I never set the parking brake. I have an extended warranty for the vehicle, 2 years/24000 miles so I do have someone to fix it but I just want to kind of tell the dealership what might be wrong with it so they have an idea on what they can do.

It could be the brakes hitting rust that forms on the rotors when it is damp outside. mine does this now and again when it is raining and cold ( low 40 to upper 30s). once the rust is off they are good. If you just got the breaks replaced they might have put new rotors on that are of a cheaper quality ( auto zone best deal kind) or the new pads just need to wear in.

Maybe they just got new pads and not rotors. If this is the case, maybe they didn't flip the rotors when changing the pads (I forgot to do that when I changed my pads in the fall and now if I stop hard it vibrates the car and makes a loud noise as well has super sonic screeching noise if I put the right amount of pressure on the pedal) I'm not too concerned about it now though I'm getting new rotors when I get my wheels in the spring.I was also goign to suggest checking the parking brake but you said it is not engaged. Sometimes if the parking brake is engaged jsut a little bit you will still be able to drive but the brakes will still be on and that could be the cause of the loud noise when shifting in reverse. My gues is, the noise when you shift is related to the brakes and not anything as serious like the trans or something in the engine

You said the front breaks were replaced - how about the rear brakes?

No I didn't have the rear ones replaced. The only thing that the dealership did was replace the front ones, give me a new battery and a set of tires. It seems that when I let my car warm up I don't have a problem so usually that is what I do before I go anywhere. I can't wait til the winter is over though so I can see if its only the cold that is doing it to my precious car or not..lol. But I also have another question for everyone...I'm not to found of the horn. I know that sounds weird but the horn sounds not "manly" enough..lol. Stupid question but is there anything that you can actually do about that? Also about the overdrive, is there a reason why it constantly stays on unless you turn it off? I know its for better gas mileage or what have you but after awhile for always leaving it on is it gonna damage the engine, etc., but any chance? Thanks!

I have a noise in my '05 brakes as well....sounds like a popping sound. Dealer looked at it, couldn't find anything wrong, and lubed the front calipers. Noise disappeared for a day, and now it's back. BTW, I have 21K on the car. Anyone else have noisy brakes?
