Increasing rack weight limit ?

Post by Kenn »

I know this has been asked previously, but I have not seen a solid answer in all of my searching the forum:How do I set up a rack system on my vibe that goes beyone the 75 pound factory weight limit? I have been looking into setting up a system for two kayaks. The major problem as I see it is the 75 pounds weight limit for the factory rack. One of my boats is 45 pounds and the other is 53 pounds. I don't really want to risk my kayaks or someone else's life on the bet that the 75 pound limit is just the factory being conservative. I was toying with the idea of avoiding the factory rails entirely and setting up a front AND a back tower system, but the Thule and Yakima customizing web pages don't seem to like that idea at all. They don't seem to mind setting up such a system on a Matrix and I can't imagine a great difference.I also noticed that some individuals claimed that the Thule 751xt increased the load capacity, but that doesn't seem to make much sense since they simply clamp onto the factory rails. I would really like to know if anyone has actually done something of this sort AND knows that the weight limit is increased. p.s. I have already read arguments about just going with a trailer and I am not really interested. Thanks for your time.

instead of securing the boats to the rails, secure them thru the car. have the straps go around inside your car. 100lbs shouldn't be too bad. weight limits are always set lower just to make you don't push it to the limit.

I have used the GM OEM rack which is actually the Thule 751xt for the rear rack then purchased a Thule Aero 400 foot pack (new version is the 400xt) and Thule 2119 fit kit for the front. This is the same kit used for the matrix and it even says vibe on the instruction sheet. This way you only have 1/2 the weight on the factory rack and half of the weight over the front doors. I've got a big freeride bike and the THule Superg carrier and I often take a friends bike along on top. The total weight is way over 75 pounds. With this set up I can get the rear hatch open.I've still got the other GM OEM rack that clamps on if your interested.
