I repeated to my husband who told me this back in October as I was planning to purchase some Blizzaks or Hankook tires for the winter. But since I had just spent part of my Permanent Fund Dividend check (money I get simply for living in the great state of Alaska) on my car PC, enough left over for the wheels, Mav thought it unnecessary to spend the money on winter tires. So I said, "fine, but keep in mind, if i hit something or someone that could have been prevented with good winter tires, then it's your fault!" And as he shrugged and walked off, he probably thought I'd forget about that conversation as he did until last Monday, Jan 31.custom cold air intake I now have:on the positive side, my diy grill i did over last summer will go from homemade look to JDM look. the diy cleared and "chrome" painted headlights will also be upgraded to the new 06 chrome headlights (to be cleared before install). the crappy 3M clear bra install job i did last May will also be done professionally, as well as some springs for improved handling, gutted downpipe, and Cobb Access Port (ECM upgrade) that will take me to stage 2 and 305 hp/320 ft-lbs tq. thank you, insurance for your wonderful contribution! original:diy grill 4:custom grill (courtesy of USAA):OEM headlights and cleared headlights:"chrome" painted cleared headlights:06 OEM chrome headlights (to be cleared):
so, care to share the story? all i know is with my awd vibe, the only way i can see not having snow tires causing a wreck is if i got on the gas and kicked the (removed) end out and couldn't get control back.

yup, totally my fault... funny she buys things without asking me but didn't buy these when I expressed an opinion of her maybe not needing them. Ah well...I can't win. I slide all over the place to and I got winter tires...

Without knowing the details of how the damage got there, it is hard to say......At any rate, it's just crunched up metal. It's not the end of the world, just get the thing fixed and move on... And spend some of that money that was going toward mods or whatever and buy the tires!

Story:coming from one stop light to another one, following a truck (obviously) about 20 yards, plenty of room because the roads were terrible. light turns red as it always does in that particular spot, so i was going about 5 mph. i tried to get into the other lane as soon as i realized the brakes didn't matter but kept on sliding forward (darn those ABS do what they're supposed to!). since it was obvious to me that i wasn't slowing down, i threw the car into reverse to try and either stop or point myself into the other lane. that didn't work either. finally, after i managed the little bit of traction from my stock crappy tires (yes, Subaru owners complain about them as much as vibe owners complain about the Contis) I started into the other lane but still into the truck that was now stopped at the red light. if I had any winter tires on the car other than the stock ones, I can guarantee that it would have been avoided. *edit* as to not cause problems....

Ah well...I can't win. I slide all over the place to and I got winter tires...funny how last winter when i slid all over the place in my VGT it was because i didn't know how to drive in the snow.... and it wasn't an expressed opinion that you didn't think i needed them, but more of "you're getting all these things for your car, so you shouldn't be spending money on tires too. you don't need winter tires. you have awd." so i said fine, i won't get them. i only drive 85% of the time in my car for work 6-7 days a week, 12-14 hours a day. that's why i got the awd in the first place (ok, maybe not the ONLY reason, but one of the main ones! ).

I had that happen once.Hope the TRDSube will be all better real soon. Damage estimate?

current damage estimate sits at $4500 before they start taking the car apart. however, it is nice of USAA to pay for my spiffy new custom grill! lol. and a few other items they added for me... like headlights and what not. glad they are so willing to work with me on this.
you subie was looking nice. too bad it gothit. BUT, i wouldn't agree to give you anything. lolhey, you didn't have to listen to him. your car, your desicion. lol
well, duh. i would agree. and why did i listen to him? all i can say is that it was out of defiance. i usually DON'T cause he never says anything, but since he said something, then I have to listen. It's not often he makes a comment. But I knew better and should have just bought them anyways.kinda of like the LCD screen that is still half put together in the dash.... that will now end up costing more $$ to have done correctly. oh well.
however i must say that while i give yall a hard time i am totally whipped for my gf becky... i offer up suggestions but most of the time unless it is vehicle related she has the final say. I say vehicle related because she has consented that i know more about vehicles than her so she listens to what i say or find out about cars. any time her stratus has a problem, she has started turning to calling me b4 calling someone in NE where she is which i find totally funny because i can't do anything if i can't see or hear what the problem is.. lol

Quote, originally posted by drunkenvibe »sliding for 20 yards while going 5mph?yes. i invite you to come up here during our freezing rain and ice storms to drive your AWD vibe. do a little test and see how fast you stop on stock tires going 5 mph on pure ice. then tell me about it.and actually, when i hit the ditch in my VGT, it was 2 yrs ago. that obviously was due to messing around doing ebrake slides at about 20 mph. there's a bit of a difference.

I bought my vibe in december and the first thing i did was to put snow tire on it and yes i had those conti on it. Here in N.B Canada they 're thinking of puting a law that everyone will have to use snow tire in the winter.
I would have to think that Ice ANYTHING makes AWD, Winter tires, and anything else pretty irrellevant. There's just no traction, period. Now if it was just powder? Maybe the winter tires would've helped, but I can't imagine the tread pattern can help THAT much?

fresh snow is fun to drive in the AWD. i can do brodies and drift. however, the ice.... that sucks. i will say again, that winter tires WOULD have made enough of a difference to MOVE the car into the other lane thus AVOIDING me from hitting the truck. Yesterday, I showed my tech on the way to lunch where and how it happened. it was a good 50 yards and you literally cannot go much faster than 10 mph if you are first in line to turn (double turn lane) from a full stop to the next lights. when following another vehicle, you get up to about 5 mph. by the time we made the turn, it goes into that 50 yard straight away til the lights. in the ice, you can't go too fast anyways. literraly, 3 more feet when i caught traction to the wheels, i'd have been in the other lane. just couldn't get the tires to catch early enough. no matter, car's in the shop the next week or so and i'm driving a grand prix.
