film on windshield

I noticed the other day that my wiper blades seemed to be wearing out, no wonder with over 30 days of straight rain .Anyways I decided to clean my windshield before putting on the new blades and I noticed this really sticky film covering the entire windshield and I cannot seem to get it off using windex and armour all auto glass cleaner. Is this residue from using rainx in the past or maybe from the teflon spray from the car wash? If anybody has any ideas of how to get this stuff off that would be a big help. Thanks

you wash your windows at the gas station? I find when I use their washerfluid, it leaves a film that takes forever to remove..

I just picked up a pair of Bosch wiper blades, its the first time the blades have been changed since I bought the car, hopefully they will work better..

next time you're at a car wash, take a can of Coke or Pepsi (or equivalant) and pour it evenly over the windshield. Wash car as usual, notice that the film is now gone!

hmmm !! I may try that ! Will it give my car cavities? I have used coke before to help loosen rusty bolts, thanks for the tip

Are you sure the film is on the outside? Even nonsmokers get film on the inside of their windows. Something to do with the chemicals given off by plastics. If it is on the inside Windex won't work as good as spray products designed specifically for the inside.

A film on the outside? I remember using rainx a long time ago and it ruined my wipers. (Ok, I know I don't need to run the wipers with rainx but sometimes it just doesn't do a good job)... anywho... it's probably some form of grease or chemical that will need more than regular car wash soap to get it off. I would suggest goo-gone but put it on a paper towel, not directly on the window (to prevent any mishaps with paint). You're liable to have goo-gone or something similar anyway, right? You may also want to try something like Formula 409 or some kind of degreaser, just don't spray it on the window so you don't run the risk of getting any on your paint. Put it on a rag or paper towel then wipe. You can then use a regular alcohol based window cleaner and you should be fine.If you have any kind of stickers or decals on that window, the goo-gone and possibly the degreasers might lift it from the window, especially if you overly soak it. Putting the stuff on a rag or paper towel first might help prevent any problems with that.Dave

ahh thanks dave for the tips Goo gone is a great idea !The film is on the outside window, if I try to clean it off it just gets smeared around... I will pick up a bottle and a 6 pack of diet coke today !

Yeh - Diet coke is probably better as I am sure it is the citric and/or phosphoric acid that does the job, not the high fructose corn syrup. Another question - is there a downside to using the RainX?

I love rainx and have been using it for years. Which is why I doubt this waxy film on my windshield is caused by any rainx residue..
