Driving my Japanese built GM Lotus Supercar (or Deja Vu)

Post by GMJAP »

My previous car was a 91 Geo Storm (base 5s), which was sold and marketed by GM but was essentially the same car as the Isuzu Impulse. The car had the Isuzu 4XE1 engine, SOHC for the base model, and DOHC for the performance GSi version. The Storm was sold overseas as the Asuna Sunfire. At the time the 4XE1 was in the planning stages at Isuzu, Lotus was looking for a partner to make an inexpensive 4-banger for their upcoming Elan M100. Since Lotus usually builds their own engines, they wanted to co-design this new engine. After Toyota would not work with them on the design, they settled on a deal with Isuzu and co-designed the 4XE1, the DOHC version of which went into the Lotus Elan M100 along with an Isuzu transmission. So without intending to repeat the past I now drive a base Pontiac Vibe, which is sold and marketed by GM, but is essentially the same car as the Toyota Matrix. The car has the Toyota 1ZZ engine in the base, and the 2ZZ in the performance GT version. The Vibe was sold overseas as the Toyota Voltz.Today I read what finally clinched the feeling of deja vu: the Lotus Elise and upcoming Exige both use the 2ZZ engine. (I don't think Lotus participated in the engine design though).Weirdness.

Time for an engine swap. Pontiac Vibe powered by Lotus sounds catchy.

Perhaps it's a tad inappropriate to say "Lotus, powered by GM"?

My previous car before the Vibe was also a Geo Storm GSi. Loved that little car! Had it only a little tunned up and had nice wide cooper cobras on it that made it really stick to the road in tight turns. Unfortunatly I blew the motor on the way to work one day and ended up donating it to Rawhide.
