Favorite Christmas/Holiday song?

Post by Kari »

I think this might be one Christmas/Holiday topic we haven't covered...I did a search and I didn't see one, though it's hard to think of every possible topic title so I might have missed it, and if I did, oh well, I guess we have another thread now. Anyway, what's your favorite Christmas or Holiday song? What's your favorite person/group to perform it?I really love "O Holy Night" and I, even though they're a boyband, I really love *NSYNC's version of it. It's totally not what you might be thinking if you haven't heard it..it's acapella and really beautiful.Another favorite, which is what inspired me to write this thread, is "Ave Maria" when done by 98 Degrees. Yeah, another boyband, but once again, an acapella rendition, and IMHO no one beats the harmonies of 98 Degrees, simply because 2 of their 4 members are brothers so their voices blend soooo well. Besides, they're from Cincinnati. Their version of "Ave Maria" is so haunting and beautiful at the same time...it's great. So what's your favorite Christmas or holiday song? Who sings it best?

Top Three:"The Christmas Song" (definitive version by Nat King Cole).Written by Mel Tormé and Robert Wells (1944), it's arguably the most beautiful secular Christmas composition ever. Took me six months to learn how to play it on guitar and I'm still fascinated by it. (BTW, that's Houstonian Herb Ellis on the guitar in the NKC version)."Oh Holy Night"Lyrics by Placide Clappeau (or Chappeau de Roquemaure); music by Adolphe Adam (1847), the English translation is by John S. Dwight.Who doesn't get goosebumps when you hear "Fall on your knees"? The best versions still are the simplest, when the vocalist sticks to the melody line and lets it do the work. Written almost 100 years before "The Christmas Song" and still as contemporary and stirring today as it was then."Christmas Time is Here"Vince Guaraldi & Lee Mendelson wrote this for the Charlie Brown Christmas Album in 1965 and, although covered by a few jazz artists since, theirs is still the definitive version. Of course, it's all WRONG. By themselves, the simple lyrics seem almost cliché. But as they tenaciously float over the rocky, diminished chords, they become a bittersweet anthem for peace (ending with "Oh that we could always see such spirit through the year")Kinda like oil and vinegar...shouldn't work, but it does.

Mele Kalikimaka, by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters, I think. Living in the Midwest, instead of dreaming of a "White Christmas," I dream that "Christmas...will be green and bright. The sun will shine by day and all the stars at night." Sigh....
