Glad that's over

Post by ColonelPanic »

When I bought the GM extended warranty, I kinda sorta didn't have $1900 to throw down on that thing, so I used the interest-free financing thing 15 months @ 112 per month. So, basically I've been paying a $504/month car payment since last fall. The financing was great, directly debited each month from my account but they never sent me anything to let me know when the stupid thing was going to be paid off. And if they sent me any documentation on the loan when I took it out, I probably have lost or misplaced it. I figured December's payment would be the last. So, I called them today to find out when the warranty was paid off. Their response: November's payment.Woo hoo! Now I can go trade it in on something and not have to worry about paying for a warranty on a car I do not own.

I bought the waranty on the 99 Galant v6 that I bought new and it was the biggest rippoff ever, I didnt use it and it was 2300 dollars down the drain. When I had 35000 miles on the car I tried to get it back since I was still under factory waranty. They said that the extended waranty was from day one, what a rippoff!

It's never an easy decision, you won't know if you will be throwing your money down the toilet or if that warranty will be the best thing you've bought for that car. I have to say, my extended warranty has been very much useful... And if the transmission is going like I am suspecting, it will be even more worth it. This is the second car I've had which I've been extremely fortunate that I bought the extended warranty, and I plan on keeping with that tradition the next time. scherry2, sorry man but absotively no plans on buying any more Vibes. Great cars and all, but I want to take a risk on something different this time around, not the same ol' same ol'.

Stay away from Kias... Normal people have bad luck with those - You... would probably have a nuclear meltdown... Just joking my friend. That's sad you had so many problems with your car, I hope you stick around if you trade in your unruly auto.

If you welded the hood shut on CP's Vibe you would be unwelding it shortly. Very shortly.I don't think anyone can deny that his Vibe is a problem child. And wouldn't you need to get to things under the hood occasionally like to uh, change the oil, or is that unnecessary maintenance on a Toyota?

My experiement was not as successful as I had anticipated, however. Considering the abysmal service history of my particular Toyota-engineered automobile, I felt that just welding the hood shut would not be sufficient. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if I just weld my hood shut, I would be screwed in no time! The Mrs. is so right about that one. In order to continue with this project, I had to prepare for continuing mechanical component failures, just as I have witnessed time and time again as I have owned this "quality" Toyota vehicle. So, I had not a choice really, but to first try to put a mechanic and the various provisions he would need to stay alive in there. Any good mechanic needs a good set of tools, so those had to be included as well. Seeing that the engine has been leaking coolant internally since it was almost new, I had to fit a bunch of that in there too so he could refill it. Then onto the extra parts - my, oh my, how things were getting cramped in there! You know, things like A/C compressors that apparently need to be replaced on this car at the same intervals as oil changes? Unfortunately though, I was unable to wedge the spare engine and transmission into the engine bay, regardless of how hard I tried. If I didn't know any better, I would suspect that Toyota didn't intend on a spare engine and transmission sitting in the engine bay! They sure didn't leave me room for that. So I had to give up. Which I guess is good, I don't think the mechanic would have made it that long in there, and I would probably feel sorta guilty about that. And besides, if I welded my hood shut, I have no dobut that there would be irreparable damage done to my pristine Toyota quality chipped and orange peeled paint job on the hood. Too bad I won't ever own another Toyota in order to find out about welding the hood shut again, but oh well, such is life.

It bothers me bad enough as it is when people try to call the Vibe one. Plus, at 25,000+ miles a year, I use a LOT of fuel so I demand seeing somewhere around 30 MPG highway on the window sticker, otherwise I have no use for that vehicle. Which neither the FWD (19/24) or AWD (18/23) can come close. I really can't spend much over $20K if I cane even afford that much, so even if I did find it appealing I couldn't afford it anyway. I still owe ~$12,500 on the Vibe.

And, I almost forgot...Quote, originally posted by george »yeah whats up with that dont buy a car because of warranty that alone should put p a red flag look at KIA . please 100,000 mile come on buy a car thats of quailty like what we already have a toyota "weld the hood shut " quailty in an awesome far supirior looking package like the Vibe receipe for a winnerDon't worry, I won't be buying one of those Kias. I'm heading straight to the Hyundai dealer and picking up a new Sonata. (removed)! And no, I am not buying that car because of the warranty. I find there are far too many other strong, positive selling points to consider with the car that the warranty has been bumped down the list... Personally, I don't see how a manufacturer standing behind their product would set off any "red flags" as you have stated. If that's the case, hmm, last time I checked, TOYOTA has that longer powertrain warranty (5yr/60,000) that GM does (3yr/36000 bumper-to-bumper only.) So, if I were to use that sort of logic, a GM, Ford, or anyone else with a shorter warranty would be far more reliable... "Oh, I don't think I should buy that Corolla, it has a longer powertrain warranty, which by golly is setting off a red flag that it is going to be a piece of junk!" eh? But as we all know, Toyotas are so much better than everything else, so that just can't be, must be faulty logic. Even more faulty if you consider how short a Volkswagen warranty used to be, 24,000 miles or so, were they the best cars on the road? Did they not need a warranty? IMHO, more warranty = more confidence from the manufacturer, less is the opposite. I can't see how someone would give you a 100,000 mile warranty if they knew that they would have to replace every single engine or transmission in their vehicles. At least I wouldn't have to take out a loan to pay for the extended warranty.

Very interesting to hear, Mike... I knew there was a "money back guarantee" on the MajorGuard that I bought, provided the warranty was not used... You would get a full refund of the purchase price before the first 60 days or something like that. But your experience has sparked quite a bit of interest over here in this direction. I was not aware that you could get at least *some* back... Seeing that this warranty is transferrable, I figured that the next owner would be able to leech off of my hard earned money spent for the added protection. So, I guess it transfers *only* if you want the warranty to?I wonder if this is an automatic thing, once the vehicle is no longer in your name, they start the process of refunding the extended warranty? Or, are there steps involved (and your dealer took care of that for you?) Seeing that you traded at a GM dealer on another GM product, I guess they could have taken care of that for you?I will definitely be calling GM about this... Especially seeing that I won't be buying GM this time around, so there may be some things that I need to take care of myself. If I can get some of that money back, more power to me... I need all the help I can get.
