MBA

I am thinking about enrolling in an MBA program. I did a search and see a few members mention being in programs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I figure if the company i work for will pay for it why not take advantage.

I'm not sure what the structure or workload is of MBA programs but I know the MA program I'm in is about to kill me with all of the reading and papers -- about 4x what I had in undergrad, plus I'm trying to work at the same time. It sucks.

I went back for an MBA 3 yrs after graduation. Did it at night at a local Cal State while working full time. Some thoughts:1 - always a good idea to invest in yourself, if your employer will subsidize it, even better. 2 - I learned to be a much better student in grad school. I pretty much skated thru HS and college and never studied that much. In grad school the level of material is higher, the level of your peers is higher and while working, you don't have the luxury of time. You have to learn to focus and use time effectively. At times it will be a PITA and the workload will be overwhelming, but you adapt. Form a study group with a few other students if possible. With internet, it would be easy to do a lot of interaction online.3 - I was fortunate in that the school had started a new tightly focused three year program, so there was a core group of us all on the same track. We were in the same classes and could draw on each other. We were from a variety of industry/government positions. I found the peer interaction to be at least as valuable as the instruction. Companies pay lots of money to organizations like TEC for their execs to get this same interaction.4 - As it turns out, the MBA really didn't impact my career directly. I was near the end of my first year when an unexpected opportunity arose to start my own business, which I am still doing 21 years later. I finished the program, but the MBA as a resume enhancement was sort of irrelevant. But now that our company is bigger, management is a greater role than entrepreneurship, and I do draw from what I learned in school, especially about business law, org behavior and accounting.5 - I met my wife in grad school!Good luck.
